Morning All, Before I carry on, full disclosure, Fellows are sponsoring me for the podcast this season, I held off posting about this watch until after the sale, as I don't want this to be taken as me part of that, instead this is me sharing something I saw that thought might be of interest/discussion. If the mods feel this thread is inappropriate, I apologise, and ask that it is deleted. On to the watch - As I said on this weeks show, I got to pick whatever I wanted, and say whatever I liked about it - I felt this Ed White was an honest watch, which if I had the money, I'd like to own. Pulling it apart with the help of Moonwatch Only: B1 DON Bezel with quite a large dent at 70. A7 Tall Markers - Close T Dial with partially degraded/discoloured lume. A full length 1035 with No. 6 end links A very crisp case, with clear Hippocampus on the case back. Movement and Chronograph functions were running. Serial: 2453XXXX Watching the sale yesterday, further reinforced for me that the 105.003-65 is way out of my league, with this one closing at £9,600 + 27.6% buyers premium (£12,250). Despite what's felt like a bit of a lull over the last few months, it seems like Ed White's are still climbing in price. Would love to hear the collective's thoughts... and wonder if anyone here picked it up?
Not me but I sourced one elsewhere recently, that price soothes my nerves a little, though mine is minus a bracelet which is presumably worth a grand or so in its own right.
The bracelet and end links seem to add a pretty chunky premium. I guess it's still a sellers marker whilst demand stays high.
Throwing caution to the wind, I think there was a bit of brown to the dial, and a bit of blue to the bezel. Pictures were taken under a daylight lamp, and then corrected for white balance.
Subtracting a bit of value in the bezel, but adding much more in the end links and bracelet, I'd say this was more or less what it's worth. So far the 105.003s have appreciated in value in a much more sober fashion than 2998s and other contemporary sports chronographs, and I feel better about that
Mine is the same bracelet and ends set as this one and similar condition but with boxes and papers. There is also a 1968 Sales receipt to my dad from Bensons London for £65 so I guess I’m happy with today’s values, not that I’ll ever sell.
Unattractive lume on lower dial plots, caseback polished in a lathe, but otherwise original looking and complete. Those algae coloured lume plots are the only thing holding it back. I think it was the right price
Thanks to everyone who has participated in this thread. In my opinion, threads like this where the jedi masters evaluate various aspects of sold watches vs. price are incredibly informative.
Bracelet plus ends would be about $3k at today's prices so subtracting that, agree, about right for the market.
What could be the cause of the difference in aging between top and lower dial plots? The top dial plots look very nice.
Thanks guys - really educational to read the back and forth. Why this might be that, and the reasons so. Other than the bump on the bezel it's a very 'pleasing' looking watch - the different discolourations complement each other, and overall nice look.
A year of events, and 28 podcast interviews with watch collectors... and then some negotiation over a pub lunch got the podcast sponsored for 7 episodes (pre roll ad, talk about 6 lots from the watch sale on a “news” episode, and some Instagram posts marked as sponsored). Just helps to make it sustainable really, but every little helps.
I see it as well deserved recognition that Chris's efforts and knowledge are worthy of commercial support . And that he is a sell out whore of course.
