This then begs my next question- perhaps for another thread- would anyone actually wear a 7 figure watch on the regular, out in the world? I know many member here, including myself, have no reservations about wearing a mid 5 figure watch (I bought my GMt when it was $2k, and wore the shit out of it for 18 years, why would that change now?), but when it hits that dollar amount- will an insurer even insure it if they know the owner intends to wear it to work or the grocery or whatever?
Maybe it's going here https://watchfund.com 🤨

Doubt it. They tend not to participate in big auction( read below) to much risk on something like this.

that being said I’m 99% sure a few of these funds have manipulated the market a few years back.

simple to do actually. Buy up quietly a bunch a bit well known models in good condition and one or 2 in excellent. Send one of the excellent ones to auction. Have 2 friends bid it up to 1.5x traditional value. Now all those upper mid level pieces you purchased have gone up.
I’m not saying it happened with the Evil Nina... but it sure looks like that is what happened to me.

A league of their own.
People spend money on a banana ducted taped on wall.
You could buy almost nine bananas for this amount!

I was kidding about the fund for that watch, but actually think that fund is not a good idea, except for those on the inside, for precisely the reason you give. Highly speculative and easily manipulated. I'm surprised it's still open.

Well I did once wear a 7 figure Patek for a couple of minutes, indoors, sitting down, with my wrist on the table.

There are multiple watch investment funds out there. There are ways with enough money that you can make some money without manipulating the market currently. But it is still risky like any investment.

It's the risky part that doesn't make it a slam dunk as implied by the funds. As most of us know in the collectable field what goes up......

To be honest, when one of the rarest Rolexes on earth surfaces, in this case, a 6538 with explorer dial, you have to expect nuttiness. Regardless of condition. Some might even call thenm POS...now, if there's a correct bezel and bracelet lying around, does that make it a correctly restored watch? Aren't rare automobiles restored in this manner? Then the price might be justified.

"FIFY", as they say.

I have watches with fewer known specimens in the watch collecting society after all, and I don't see them stirring the purses of auction goers any time soon.

That is rather interesting I’ve never come across a watch fund, didn’t know it existed. The “ad” says worst performance was 11% regularly goes 20% with no mention of “past performance is no guarantee of future results” I realize you brought it up in jest but I’m going to dig into it more, just out of curiosity

I should have been more specific.."rarest Rolex Submariner". Of course rarity doesn't automatically translate to desirability.

Cheers,

Rolex never confirmed anything related to vintage I guess, look at the bluberries insert debate 🍿🍿

there is a multi page thread on that and people are still bickering about its authenticity 🍿
