The solid gold version of the octagonal Defy diver, the G20672 from 1969, is near the top of my Zenith short list. Step one toward acquisition of this elusive grail is complete: I have just won the dial, movement (2552PC), winding crown, hour and minute hands at auction. Now the easy part... all I need is the rest of the kit... the solid gold case and bracelet. Please keep your eyes open and let me know if you come across these items.
Ho, ho! Wait 'till sumerian sees this! Seriously, I think this is a spectacular watch...and I've never even seen one. I don't know how many of these were even produced, as gold would not be an obvious choice for what was the consummate tool watch, the Defy. I doubt production reached far into three digits. Given the odd design (which is actually pure genius, though you may not realize it until you put it on the wrist), a large proportion of the few made probably were melted down in the ensuing years, like the one that left behind this dial, leaving.....who knows?
MMMD DID YOU KNOW THAT THE DIAL ON THESE DEFYs ARE 18K SOLD GOLD TAKE THE DIAL OFF AND LOOK AT THE BACK, THIS IS A PICTURE OF MY DEFY 18K DIAL.
...another one gone to an early grave....or do you have the rest of the watch, BGBG? (and I'm asking nicely: would you please stop with the all-caps - it really does seem like you are yelling all the time)
Like mmmd i am also looking for a case, did you get the info i poted about the 985d460 a386 on you tube.
I can see we will all be making a special order of Defy cases in 18K soon I did get the A 386 information - thank you.
Here's some more shots from my disorganized box o' catalogs Also apparently comes with a green dial (curiously with the same reference number) - nothing says moolah like gold & green (for us in the US anyway)
Wow, I dig that G 20670. Interesting that the dial doesn't appear to say "de luxe"... but the green says enough in itself. The minute hand in that catalog shot of the G 20672 is too short. It bugs me. Please have it lengthened. BCBG, thanks for the information about the dial... I'm glad the people who scrapped the case didn't realize that.
At 135 grams, I think it’s fair to call it a monster Recent acquisition, purchased from the original owner.
@MMMD 4 years - any luck on your project? @Vanallard - good lord, that is literally a gold brick on your wrist!
In its current setting, the bracelet fits a 7.5 inch wrist but it has three additional expansions/steps on the clasp for another half inch or 8 inches total.
