Hello I know most people do not like marriage watches and that’s ok but that’s not why I’m here… I have 2 that I am looking at that I like but I am wondering if by looking at the backside if you can tell if the insides are authentic zenith pocket watches? I feel like the faces are not authentic (but idk) and I am ok with that but I want the internal to be. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I believe there are forum rules against discussing fake/counterfeit watches and parts. This branded dial is made by a third party, therefore fake and probably in violation of Zenith's trademark.

The forum rules state that discussions on “fake/counterfeit ” watches is fine in order to point it out, which is exactly why I came to find out if someone here had the eye to tell if the internal mechanism in these watches are indeed real zenith or not.

I think you came to the wrong place to discuss your fake watches.

Oh please, that is obviously not what the rules mean. You already admitted that you know the dial is fake.
No I said I felt that one of the faces wasn’t authentic and that I did not know for sure. Which is precisely why I asked for the help of others who know more than I do. Instead I get razzed by people who could help but don’t.

Why should anyone help you when fake watches aren't welcome or allowed. Read the room.

Both calibers are genuine Zenith, but they never left the factory in those cases or with those dials.
Had they have been made into marriage watches with sterile dials it would not be an issue.
However, the addition of Zenith markings makes them into counterfeits.

So I’m not going to link to the parts for these, but they come as a marriage watch conversion kit on AliExpress, Wish and TEMU, the kits cost about $20, the dials are also both sold and produced cheaply, they are counterfeit as they use trademarks without permission which is not allowed here.

The Zenith pocket watch movement itself is real, and worth about $25-50 in running condition.

Here’s one that sold for just under $40.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/156364938413

So in total the sellers have about $60-80 into the watches plus a minor amount of labor as these aren’t hard to do a half-assed service on. They then sell them for several hundred or more to people that typically think they’re buying a real watch.

Thank you for the info. I appreciate it. I shall not purchase.

I confirm that both movements are genuine Zenith.

I used to frown at "mariage" watches also, but have changed mind some time ago. Provided that the original dial and hands are still present. There are so much orphaned pocket watch movements around, where some idiot owner had decided to scrap the watch for the material value of the case. What to do with the remaining movements? "Mariage" watches are imo a great approach for "revival" of orphaned pocket watch movements and might even temp buyers to look into the pocket watch field, which before had never thought of these.

And if someone thinks that this still is a trademark infringement and such watches are "fake", then most of the current American pocket watches are "fake" also, because most of the gold plated watches have been recased in the last 100-150 years, some even several times ....

Thank you, I didn’t realize the amount of people that this would upset. I also thought it was kind of a neat way to recycle old pocket watches but not knowing anything about watches I didn’t know. I still like the idea but the ones I posted are not real dials (what I’m told) so I will not be purchasing. Thank you for your comment!
