A nice example of a Dienstuhr Heer, Wermacht issued wristwatch. Serial number D. 8379654 H. places this in the early if not the first production run of Zenith DH watches.

Gilt Dial appears to be all original, with a nice glossy finish overall, and a lovely sub seconds dial that catches and reflects the light nicely. Dial shows some lack of gloss, presumably from radium affecting the dial around each numeral and from the hands. This lack of gloss is visible in certain lights and at certain viewing angles. The dial is the earlier variant with all Arabic numbers lumed, and also each with a consistent size. numeral.

There is a nice consistency of the lume color and texture both on the hands and the numbers. Placing the dial side of the watch against my watchmakers Geiger counter set it clicking, so I presume that both the dial and hands are still carrying the original radium lume. The H & M hands have that lovely Zenith shape with the lume trapped within.

The 35mm Case is all stainless steel, and presents itself well. Fixed lugs. No major scuffs or scrapes are evident anywhere. Any minor case scuff marks or tiny dings appear over the top of what I presume was the original case finish. Overall, it looks very honest to my eye. I believe the fine-toothed crown to be original as well, and it shows similar wear consistent with the rest of the watch.

The screw-on caseback carries the watch serial number on the exterior. That serial number and its application in an arc is consistent with other known examples. The inside carries the Zenith logo, the Brevet marking as well as acier inoxydable. 092722FE-1EF1-4515-B1A7-555DFC3C0A17.jpeg

12-4-6 movement, Serial number 3439656 is running very nicely and dates the watch to 1942 or 1943 per published dating charts, and is also consistent datewise with the case serial number and the dial's arrangement. Movement is clean and screw slots look neat and tidy as well. It is a treat to look at. Timekeeping is very good. I purchased the watch in 2016 in serviced condition and it continues to run well.

The crystal has wear that would be consistent with one that has been fitted to the watch for years. I cannot tell if it is original to the watch, or a later replacement. In either case it appears to have been with this watch for quite some time.

Case diameter less crown is 35mm . Lug to lug, it measures 44mm. Strap size is 18mm. I find it wears nicely on the wrist, and I consider it to wear “on size” with its 10mm thick case. The rather small bezel does allow the dial to appear a bit larger that it might otherwise. A black leather strap is fitted that shows some wear.

I have been winding and wearing the watch in rotation for 4 years without any issues. However upon removing the caseback and iron cover to photograph the movement for this ad, I noticed that one of the gears in the geartrain winding the barrel is missing two teeth. Yet when I wind the watch via the crown, I did not notice anything amiss.
I was able to find a donor 12-4-6 movement with this same gear in good condition. This DH will be sold with the donor movement, including that gear. My plan was to have the damaged gear replaced at my next visit to my watchmaker while I waited, or replaced at the next full service. I believe the next owner could follow that same plan.
