Hello All, I have seen this Geneve at a local auction site and I really like the looks on her, but would like some opinions on the matter before I move on it. The site does not offer a lot of details, and only one pic: The description only says it is a gold case and has manual movement. It is both an online and on site auction, so if needed I can go to the place and look it over. Anything I should focus on? Thanks in advance for your help and advice.
It's at €400 now, and there's a 26% buyer's premium on top of that. Then, there's shipping which has a convoluted description on the website.
Actually, I'm not certain that the case is correct, based on the one photo. On further reflection, I'd say that it is either an incorrect case, or (more likely) has been polished very poorly.
I'm daring people to outbid me. The watch isn't perfect (the markers are tarnished, and after talking with Tony, I believe the lugs were recut) but would make an excellent watch for work on shirt & tie days or suit days. I've bid approximately what it would be worth as scrap gold & parts. The watch is lot #377, and the live auction is now in the early 300's. Crunch time!
When it's over, please somebody post the auction website. I'm not a buyer for this watch, just curious about different auction sites.
Up to Lot 360 - getting down to the wire! http://live.invaluable.com/catalog/...-2b31-4fdc-aea7-7ab9fa137a27&am=6&channelID=1
With the 26% premium on top of the €600 / $794.78 hammer price, the watch ended up being €756 / $875.50 - a bargain for a solid gold Genéve. The value of the gold alone is probably $650 - $700 (if it's 18k which I suspect), then add in the parts (caliber, dial, etc.) and it could be parted out / melted for what I just paid. If it's running and as clean on the inside as the dial is, this is a steal. On the flip side, what if it's a pile of junk inside and needs a donor movement to right all the wrongs? How much would a 26x or 28x manual wind caliber* cost - $75? $125? So what if this watch were listed on eBay - what would it go for? Do you think it would sell with good pictures and a recent (provable) service for $1500? $1800? *I forget which series this has inside , so maybe @Tony C. can give an assist. He's certainly owned enough of these.
Likely a 2903 or (34mm), or 2904 (36mm) – if the case is correct. Dennison case would be a different reference. The earlier 2754 and 2748 did not have the truncated markers at six.
290x references had the 26x calibers inside. If it's a Dennison case, then it might be 9k gold, but still be powered by the same 26x series. Thanks!
It is gone now. Congratulations to the winner. May we ask if the buyer is an OF member to share more pics and details of the piece when it arrives? Best regards
Yep, it was me. Call it part of an experiment on risk / reward. If it pans out, great! If not, everyone can chide me publicly. Now I just have to figure out shipping with the Sala Retiro (the auction house).
