·It's easy to find reproduction leather WWI-style straps; David Boettcher is one maker most of us know.
I was lucky to run across this reproduction strap in 5/8" (16mm):

Instead of sewing, he supplies fabric tape. The clasp is sterling, and admittedly somewhat soft. Had to manipulate the slider to get it to latch.
But, no one is making this kind of thing, so at least it's an alternative. Spendy but worth it to me.
