An interesting article in today's Wall Street Journal, just further confirmation of the state of the secondhand luxury watch market:

Using the chart presented in the article (with data apparently supplied by Morgan Stanley), I worked out -- longhand -- what a typical "luxury" watch worth $10,000 at the end of 2021 would be worth today: about $6,400. Dang, just when I'm thinking about getting into a serious selling mode 馃槤

That's a bit more dramatic than my intuition tells me, but I would certainly believe a 25% drop in many of the watches that interest me. I suspect that the 35% drop may be biased by a few models that really plummeted (Rolex Daytona, PP sports models, etc.).

On the other hand, in the last few months I am starting to see some stronger auction results sporadically.

It鈥檚 a good time to trade up for one or two I missed out years ago. Watches in the upper bracket trade even lower. Muwahahah

Everything trades lower, except for the ones I want.

That's my guess also, as these data may be easier to find and track, and also will appear more dramatic.

Quality is always in demand. I sold two perpetual calendars at auction in June in NYC, very strong results, about 25% higher than what I expected given the general market. Plan on doing some more selling next year, auctions are a good way to go if you have something that isn't run of the mill. The 5% auction commission is money well spent.

Both are repainted, unfortunately
