its challenging a quartz Fossil and bringing a much bigger feature set and higher level of quality at a similar price point which isn’t a bad thing, and its helping making watches relevant to another generation which I also look upon as being really favorable. In the same way that something like a quartz TAG Heuer F1 chronograph was a stepping stone for me to a good mechanical watch these could serve as a gateway drug for many more young people.

Partly agree with you, I just frown at the waste generated by all these things. Disposable plastics, electronics, batteries, etc... More tech = more waste & spent energy these days, despite the greenwashing. I must be some kind of luddite.

I wear an Apple watch pretty much every day for my workouts, ever since Mrs. Darlinboy🥰gave me one (her hand-me-down - she always has the lastest and greatest) for Father's day this year. I have to say its a very useful tool for that purpose, and while my personal use is very limited, I can see why it has such a large (and growing) base. And Apple are always quite innovative - they are even expected to introduce something called "a different appearance" to the watch case in the upcoming release. 😉

From today's news... "Apple on Tuesday is expected to unveil a watch with a different appearance than the round curves. Apple’s wearable unit is expected to grow to $38.7 billion this fiscal year compared with $10 billion in 2015 when the Watch made its debut, analysts said."

See it feels good to confess doesn’t it mate 😀

It really is never going to replace or threaten the key Swiss brands nor was it ever really intended to but as a working on the car, detailing, cleaning, or working out watch there’s a lot to be said for being able to keep an eye on your schedule and take the odd call when you’ve got your hands covered in oil.

I think the keeping things quite similar isn’t a bad thing either as while they have changed the case design once already for the fourth generation, all of the straps and bracelets going back to my gen 0 black link bracelet are still compatible, so if you do upgrade you keep your bracelet and strap catalog as you go

Reading through this I was tempted for a little while, so tempted I looked it up and (fortunately?) it has an 18 hour battery life and that killed it for me.

A useful tool indeed, and if I'm honest, more so than any of my much-loved tool watches. Can't fault Apple for the careful evolution of case design - hello Speedmaster - hello Submariner - etc. And agree the straps are great - quite well designed, durable, and comfortable - and probably a good revenue generator as well. Mrs. Darlinboy🥰 has a stratospheric Apple watch:strap ratio and I don't think has ever thrown one out since Gen 0. 😲

As for battery life - works for me, I don't wear it enough hours of the day to ever run it down. But, if I ever went full-metal-apple - I'd just buy two & battery technology will no doubt will continue to improve.

Yea I was finding on my Gen 3 which is now many years out of date it gave me 2-3 days of use typically if I was wearing it full time. The Gen 0 would only just make a day, supposedly the current gen is so good it gets 2-3 days even with the screen on fulltime and longer with it set to the normal off if not tilted up mode.

I've read that the upcoming Apple Watch (t be released later today I believe) does in fact have a different form factor as mentioned.
Think like, iPhone 11 to iPhone 12 change. Went from rounded edges to more squared off edges.
Screen is supposedly going to be a tad larger while retaining the same case sizes.

I know bigger screen is better probably applies to most customers but it’s a shame they may move away from the rounded edges as they really were key to ensuring the watch didn’t get damaged, the lightness and the rounded edges redirected any impact or hit and prevented screen cracking which was really a key feature. I guess we’ll know in 4 hours.

I have been using Apple Watch for quite a number of years now (on and off) and their sports strap is most comfortable strap I have ever used. ent 100's of dollars trying to find the same material for my Moonwatch and no luck. These watches are surprisingly robust and not a lot of scratches / nicks even when wearing to the beach with sand stuck top of sunscreen on top of the glass. For me its better to wear during the work day, to keep track of my meeting (life now a days is just meeting to another meeting ) schedules. There is no emotional attachment to the watch like I have with my Omega/Rolex.

I don't wear my Series 4 very often anymore, but it's surprisingly still mint condition from the day I got it. Got the black stainless steel version and it's much more tough compared to the aluminum version. My partner has the aluminum and her screen is all scratched up, dents in the case, meanwhile the sapphire glass and case on my stainless steel is pristine. No emotional attachment as you mentioned, so banging into something is not as much of a panic moment 🙄 The black coating on the stainless steel definitely adds a layer of protection.

That being said, I think Series 4 is still the best bargain, and recommend it to anyone who asks me about it. Unless the extra health sensors are actually valuable to you - have a feeling Series 4 will still be the best value watch even with todays supposed announcement.

My Series 4 still lasts 2+ days no problem, got it on day of release. I think the jump from Series 3 to 4 was the biggest battery improvement. Battery has never been a problem for me, unless you are doing multi-hour workouts using GPS tracking, etc. then you will drain the battery faster of course.

I have and old but annoying friend that is an AW cultist. I can stand a few days of him fiddling with it before I want to run screaming or recreate the Belushi with guitar scene. My IPhone does just fine.

I like it for it's "health" features. And also it helps me put my damn phone down when I'm at home.
I'll admit, I'm glued to it most of the day (and I hate it), so it is nice to just put it down and strap on the watch when I get home.
That way, I wont miss any important texts/calls/emails (which are rare after 5PM anyway), and I won't be tempted to just hop on the phone since it is right there next to me.
I've been making an effort to reduce my screen time. And it helps.
After yesterdays announcements, I suppose I'll keep my Series 3 for at least another year.
And same with my iPhone...really mediocre updates this year. My 11 will do just fine for another year as well.

I like it as it’s convenient, has good health future and time is accurate. The only problem is I need to remember to charge it. I tend to wear the Apple on the right hand and the mechanical watch on the left hand.

Still wear it occasionally and enjoy it but mostly it is still just the bedside clock 👍
