Would you trade...

Pondering an opportunity that has recently arisen. Would you trade a current-model GMT-Master IIC (116710LN) for an excellent-condition vintage 1978 Submariner 1680 (white, not red sub, dial on original 9315/380 bracelet)? Reasoned thoughts?

I'm wearing exactly that today. A 1978 1680 on original bracelet. It's a beautiful watch to wear. I can't compare with the GMT-MASTER but I would definitely recommend the 1680. Mines in Wruw from today.

Hold on to GMT2 and buy a SUB))))) But, if serious, I would trade it. You can pick up another GMT-II, but not a lot of good subs are there...

I would trade it. Agree with Uniqez about rarity being a significant factor.

Additionally, I do not care for the modern GMT bezels, but that’s just a personal preference. I’m not a huge Sub fan, but I’d much rather have a nice vintage Sub than a modern GMT.

Trade it, 1680 is a cool piece that has been undervalued for a long time. You can always source a modern GMT for a reasonable price.

I prefer vintage so yes, trade. I’d look for a 5512/5513 though.

Guess it depends on just how badly you want that particular Sub. You can easily replace the GMT, but for me it would depend on whether the Sub meant something to me based on a particular year, or whatever. There are lots of vintage Subs out there also, and mostly less expensive than your GMT. So if you just want ANY vintage Sub, I’d shop more. But if you want THAT Sub, well, you know...

I'd make that trade. I like vintage and the smaller size. And you can always get another GMT II. (Any particular history with the GMT that you'd miss?)

I'd need to know your motivation or why you are considering the trade in order to give an honest opinion. Otherwise I'd simply be pimping my own bias (vintage > current), and I don't see how that can be helpful. But just taking your query on face value, I would make the trade in a heartbeat. 👍

Yes..in a heartbeat. But only if the 1680 is all original with a good case.

If you like both, yes, vintage should be all original and only goes up on value

Thank you, all, for the replies. I've reviewed each reply and it is almost unanimous that a trade is the way to go. I will soon be seeing the 1680 "in person" in a local meet, and will then be in the best position to judge the condition and make the final decision based on what inspires me the most. In response to "onthedial"'s post above, the motivation is purely reflective of the fact that I've always viewed the Sub as iconic, love the simplicity of the vintage case and dial elements (as well as the vintage folded link bracelet which, in itself, is a rarity), believe that this particular model has strong future value as a wearable investment, and have an opportunity acquire what could be a real gem. Further responses are, of course, welcome and appreciated!

That's a solid explanation on why you feel the need to trade. I hope the 1680 is in the condition as described and the trade is made. I firmly believe that you'll love the Sub. Pics if/when you get it! 👍
