The translation of the first part is "breath is broken". What does that refer to regarding a watch?

I’m a bit rusty but it’s the first three characters, and actually they just phonetically spell out bu-re-su. I think that’s short for bracelet.

Thanks. There is no bracelet, there's a rubber strap. Could it refer to the buckle, which isn't seen in any of the photos?

Maybe. It’s written in katakana which is used to say foreign words. So “bu-re-su” isn’t a Japanese word, it’s an attempt to write a foreign word. I’m pretty sure it’s what they use for bracelet, but they might not differentiate between straps and bracelets. So it could mean that a) the strap’s somehow broken, or b) perhaps because the bracelet was broken it’s now on a strap ?

That's a possibility; thanks for the help. I've only seen a strap referred to as a belt.

This is what google gave me...

Breath is broken. Drive is OK. There are small scratches in the case. Because this item is an antique item, I hope in a no claim no return basically. Only those with an understanding ask you for a bid.

Bracelet and belt sometimes are interchanged by non watch people. In any case it's broken as others have said. The rest of it you got with Google translate.

Glad this post came up. I've seen "breath" in dozens of watch listings from Japan, and had no idea what they were talking about.
