Hi OF, I acquired this watch a while ago and I've just gotten the chance to inspect the watch closely including opening the caseback. The watch runs great when I first tested it and I completely forgotten about it for a while. I was just wondering about the serial number on the caseback though, there seems to be 2 of them. One is outside, and the other one is inside caseback. I know that some brand like Universal for example, have a case serial number as well. But I don't really know much about Wittnauer. Does anyone know how to date them? What do you think about the second number on the inside caseback serial number, it's seems to be 2 numbers on top of the other. Any of your comments about the watch would be appreciated! Please see the photos below. Thanks heaps Andre
Hi Andre, Unfortunately, I am not aware of any information regarding Wittnauer serial numbers and dates. As you may know, Wittnauer used a variety of movements (AS, Revue, ETA, Valjoux, Venus, etc.) in their watches. They also seemed to use more than one system for numbering their watches. Anyway, nice piece! Here's mine.
Yes! Including the number on the lug, there are 3 serial numbers in total on my watch! Do you reckon it's safe to say the watch is from the 40s? Dibs on your watch! I was actually hunting for that 24 hours dial when I got this one!
I would agree that your watch looks to be from the 1940s. It also seems to combine 2 separate numbering systems however I do not know what any of the numbers represent. Dibs noted. I quite like the central circle on your dial and the Revue caliber. These old stainless steel Wittnauers are pretty great for the money.
Beautiful examples, been hunting for one for a little while . If any member here has one of these in good conditions and wants to let it go, please dm me!
A guess: one was for Longines and one was for Wittnauer with the lug to verify a pairing between case, caseback and movement in the manner of Longines... IF this is the case your watch is likely post-1950. I contacted the current owners of Wittnauer seeking information last year and they told me they have literally nothing to share about dating watches or evaluation. Kinda amazing to buy a company and not acquire any records. Nice watches you guys.
