Years ago, the Rolex Sub and the Daytona were just low-end offerings in the line. The Day-Date was king, and on the vintage Rolex forums, everybody had just a very chill time chatting about their favorite pieces.

Then, prices on the former two began to rise incredibly, and then to everyone's frustration, 90% of the conversation turned to spotting fakes. Endless discussions about fonts, bezels, nuances of Far-East cases, etc. Macro photos. Materials composition analysis. Felt like CSI.

So, with all iterations of the Speedmaster 321 climbing, is this likely to happen here?

Unlikely because none of the moderators here are exclusive speedmaster fanatics - speaking for myself I love them but I love other vintage omegas just as much.

Most on here are not Fan Boy one brand only types, great to see a WRUW with so many different brands each day.

Omega has a lineup so much broader than Rolex that its hard for that to happen, you've got so many groups, the early SM300s/SM120s, the 70s big divers, the 70s auto chronographs, the Constellations / Seamasters (which are huge, piepans in general have been going up leaps and bounds), then Geneve Dynamics, 30mm hand-winds, bumpers, Polaris', so many branches and sub-branches. I mean we've got some guys on this site that specialise in 1920s-1940s pieces and many of us hardly even recognise the models they post. That's one of the really cool things about the topics here, you've got a very big family with so many unique specialties.

Fair enough - not apples to apples. However, Speedmasters seem to be the watch that at least dominates interest here, with both with seasoned collectors and newbies. Plus, when Ed White's start climbing into the teens, and 2998's go into the 20's, the high-end fakers will start to appear. And when they do, the Speedmaster conversations may start to shift a bit from, "does this piece have the right parts for the reference," to " is this dial real or fake?" In the end, time will tell.

It's inevitable that as a forum such as this grows and its reputation develops as a no-shit stop for advice the "is this real" posts will become more frequent. It's a good thing as the forum captures a percentage of the one post blow-ins who stay and learn rather than just "is this real and how much should I set the BIN for?"

I should imagine that many of the current posters here started with that very topic as a first post.

I know I'll get savaged here, but my latest observation regarding the White/NASA era Speedmasters is that almost daily there are numerous threads started asking the opinion of a specific watch. The watch then gets picked apart and then another post pops up asking "Well what about this one then?" I guess we all learn from these threads but there just seems to be a lot of threads lately like this.

Since WUS has pretty much gone belly up for me regarding my area of interest in Speedmasters OF have become my goto haven for vintage information. Maybe I should give up reading the "Need help ASAP on this 105.003," post for Lent.

It wouldn't be a bad development, really. I'm just surprised it's taken (taking?) so long for the Omega fever to become more widespread, because I've always felt that vintage Omega has a helluva lot more to offer than several of the oft-hyped brands (e.g. Rolex, Panerai).

This has only become true in recent months. A little while back, the spread of interest seemed much wider. Now, there are more Speedy threads than ever before, partly perhaps because there is a feeling that soon prices will climb so far as to make collecting them impractical for all but the very wealthy. So, is everybody scrambling for a half-decent example before it is too late?

Have watched some start with speedmaster,s then move to other styles and have seen just as many the other way also. But it is true Speedies have picked up a fair bit of traffic lately.

There was a time not long ago when almost every post seemed to be about small gold dress watches - pie pans, deluxe models, etc. that have zero interest for me as a watch enthusiast (of course I service watches like these all the time, but they are not my own interest). The forum topics ebb and flow.

Personally I prefer the Speedmaster and diver topics myself so I am not complaining about how things are going at the moment. I admit I got more work done when the topics were more about the gold dress watches though...

    Cheers, Al

Yea I remember a couple of years back talking about how much we'd like to get some more Speedmaster guys together, now the Speedmaster crew are as big as the piepan guys.

What I'd actually like to find more of is 30mm and pre-1950s guys to expand on the knowledge base in that area

I think that's because all the Speedmaster talk has vanished from the "other" forum which is now full of "does this strap make me look fat?" Threads

The conversations seem to be quite varied still. And to be fair to many of the new posters (myself included), forums members do encourage people to post and ask questions *before buying so as not to get fleeced. Seems that is a critical value of a forum like this to a degree. While I agree, if that was the only thing being posted, that would be boring, but I think there's still a variety of topics, some for no more reason than for fun.. or Beagles!

I actually used that other forum as a reference early on to learn about both the Speedmaster, and The Omega brand in general. I haven't been on in a long long time. The quality of posts, membership, and knowledge here is unmatched, and I am confident our community will continue keeping it as such.

As for "opinions needed", "is this real/correct/etc", threads...I welcome them. In many cases, this is how a new member may get his or her start, and, I would like our Forum to be a respository of knowledge that can spot fakes, so that the fakers know their wares have no market, because they will be called out!

I'm always reading the "opinion" bits for education, even when I'm not in the market for the watch being discussed. What is learned often applies to other watches.
And, you never know it all...
