Wife would like a "Gold Watch". Any advice re vintage Omega?

Hi All,

I wanted to ask the community about their thoughts on a good choice for a watch for my wife. I gave her a Rolex Oyster (purchased here) which she loves. 34mm, with an oyster bracelet. She now has mentioned a gold watch, and I have begun the search. Below is a picture of a bumper I gave my daughter, which is similar in style to what I think my wife would like (but gold).

-She definitely would prefer a metal band, which is challenging me.

- I don't know of the best options without breaking the bank? Ideally in the $750 - $2500 range.

- Am I better served finding the watch, and then searching for a band? Even a modern band.

- She isn't one to be concerned with gold capped vs. solid gold, and "correct" band isn't a concern.

- A beefy lug Seamaster on BoR band is a good choice. I haven't seen one lately here for sale. Have had great lug purchasing here on OF.

- Not wed to Omega, and would also consider a Longines Conquest (as example) but can't recall ever seeing one on bracelet.

ANY IDEAS? All thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

A gold watch on a gold bracelet for $750 to $2,500.00? With gold around $3,300.00 per ounce? If the watch you have in mind will be a dress (casual watch, worn only occasionally), to get any use out of it, she’ll be winding it manually. Why not consider a stem winder, rather than automatic?

Completely fine with a manual, and I fully anticipate not getting a "gold" watch for that kind of money. I've seen a few gold-capped watches sell for reasonable prices, but maybe I am out of luck with gold being so pricey now?

You should be able to get something very nice in that range. Although given the current price of gold, a solid gold bracelet is certainly out of the question.

No. I think one with an original band (even if it has a bit of stretching in the links) will look nicer.

I would consider something in the Seamaster DeVille family. I recently purchased a "Kleerback" version of a Seamaster DeVille on a gold-plated BoR bracelet for less than your lower bracket.

FANTASTIC advice. Thank you very much, and thank you for the link. I will start my research. Exactly what I was hoping. I've got alerts set up here for a few threads, including the Recommended Vintage watches on eBay. I'll enjoy the thrill of the hunt!

Yes, agreed. I think these are good options... now I need to watch for one to pop up here.

You will need to be a little patient to find a gold-filled bracelet that isn't too badly worn. But they come to market now and then. A gold-capped watch won't be hard to find.

Success. Thanks to the folks here for helping. I (think) I got the right watch locally. Wife likes it, and it was within my range, although closer to the top end. Gold-capped with Gold-plated BOR band. Pretty good condition / sharp, and has original crown and crystal. I asked the jeweler open it so that I could see the movement. Looks super clean and intact to my novice eyes, and dates the watch to 1966.

Looks very nice - but did you photograph it under a stop light?
