Why are new Speedmaster Professionals cheaper than old ones?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question.

So I just went into an Omega Boutique and there was a lovely Speedmaster Professional with a glass case back for around $5800.

Looking on Chrono24 I can see second hand ones cost more than this.

Obviously I am misunderstanding something here.

Why are new Speedy Pros cheaper than older ones?

Cheers

When you say "second hand", are you referring to 1960's models or early 2000's models?

If the later, it just an example of ridiculous prices on C24. If the former, then it's due to the fact they're vintage models, rarity etc...

Thanks, yeah, I should have clarified, I meant the early 2000s models.

I totally understand why a 1960s one would be very expensive.

Yeah for 2000 models there is no justification unless you're looking at different actual models. Look under Moonwatch professional and see how they add up.

Could be special editions - Apollo (insert version here), etc.

Or the end of the Tritium watches - people are starting to pay a little more for those than they once were.

I know dealers are selling the same Moon watch I bought from a AD 3 years ago for $800 more than I paid and new is more than $1300. (Australia)

( Exchange rate would have a bit to do with it )

Yes, the prices on chrono24 often seem high. If you go elsewhere, you can find used sapphire sandwiches (and older hesalite/sapphire speedies) around ~$3K.

However, if you want a modern speedy, it makes sense to go new, as "BNIB" ones from trusted brokers can be found around $3600/$4200 (solid vs display caseback). Given how used speedies generally need a servicing, going new is attractive.

Never use Chrono24 as a way to determine fair pricing. Their fees are INSANE and seller jack up the price accordingly.

What's the best alternative to C24 then? I got my Speedmaster Mk II from there, and felt I got a pretty good deal, given the condition?

Contact the sellers directly... Watch the prices drop by 20-30%.

Note that some sellers on chrono24 advertise at other sites, too, including ebay, and sometimes their own websites. Bypassing chrono24 (and ebay) can mean lower prices, because you're not also paying for the various seller fees.

You also bypass buyer protection so do your homework on the seller and/or piece

That's pretty much a given. You can expect to get screwed if you don't do your homework.
