Who wants to be a Tobacconist?

I have been on the Briary’s (in Birmingham, AL) mailing list for years- they do some fun custom blend pipe tobaccos I have ordered from them in the past. Usually I ignore most of the promo news or in-store events but I read this email and it gave me pause:

Hello all you wonderful customers of The Briary.
We are at a monumental crossroads. In August our store will officially be 48 years old , If we make it. The store is still generating revenue but we are out of one thing that we need to continue. We have no employees.
My wife, Kay and I are going to continue to be here but will no longer be open on Mondays. The rest of the week will stay the same. This is not ideal and with any luck will not continue very long.

I have been in contact with people to possibly sell this place. It is not what I want to do but at my age I have no interest in being the only employee. We have a lot of friends that go back decades, even generations. It is a very difficult decision.
It would be doubtful that a new tobacco shop will come in and there are a lot of people that would like to use it for something else.

There is no time line at all.

Thank you for your support.

I actually thought for a second…hmmm…do I want to be a tobacconist? Do I want to move to Alabama? I’m 20 years away from retirement and I love my current job so this wouldn’t be a move for me- but I figured I would throw this out to the rest of this very bizarre group of people as someone here may want to find their second wind running an old time brick and mortar tobacco shop.

Their website sucks (which may be part of their issue) but Google has some decent pics of what it looks like.

Who’s ready to to move to Alabama?!?!

There was a time that I might have given this some real thought. My mother and brother live in Alabama, albeit about five hours away. Contrary to basically everything everyone thinks about Alabama, there are some nice places and good people there. I was an avid cigar smoker some years ago, but once I had kids in the house and a global pandemic hit, opportunities to have a cigar evaporated. Once you stop smoking cigars, it becomes very hard to understand why you ever started.

Agree about Alabama, it’s beautiful country- and the time I’ve spend in and around the major metropolitan areas of Montgomery, Huntsville and Birmingham has been lovely- great food, culture, arts and people. Like anywhere in the US where people reside in an echo chamber, it can be challenging when traveling to more remote locations.
As for cigars, I have a large humidor that is fairly self sufficient for climate and usually only smoke them in the warmer months on the patio- and alway enjoy them regardless of how long it has been.
I smoked pipes for many years but developed an issue with Virginia tobaccos irritating my mouth. And since I predominantly smoked English- which is always made up of Virginias, Orientals and Latakia- I had to curtail what types I smoked (Burleys don’t seem to bother me).

Smoking is great. These days it’s like screaming obscenities without saying word. In addition, as St. Augustine said,”without vice there could be no virtue.” I’d be fine in Alabama, everywhere I go seems to be the same with some notable differences so I’m fine wherever my feet are at.
Guess it’s tobacco city for me.
Would you guys start a go fund me for me and just throw in oodles of cash? This is gonna be a hard sell to the wife I may be going alone, which is also cool.

Very cool little shop! And yes, their website could use some help. Maybe their potential Monday employee should double as a wen designer?

Unfortunately, they don't have any churchwardens in stock. I'm in the market for one.

If you are looking for a new/custom piece, contact Mark Tinsky. I have several pipes made by him and they are sensational.

I can do Thursdays and Fridays! A bit of a commute from Sweden though...

I am trying hard to get that tobacco induced colour on my dials.

I could go on for ever... and I realize it looks like I smoke a lot. I do however keep it to one or two a week.
