haven't others posted similarly bad looking ones, but look nice after cleanup ... interested to know why this may not have that kind of potential?

because the case is polished into formless oblivion. It has lost all definition - it looks like a jellybean. That can't be fixed.

I think what we're missing is in the description:

"Owned by a SAC pilot who did amazing things he couldn't tell."

    Provenance!

While its a mess in its current state, did anyone read the description, which actually makes perfect sense, considering these were really tool watches when they were made.

"Case was finished to actually be wearable with a flightsuit vs. that clunky console tv-looking thing it started out as."

I read that, and it seems dubious. Why not buy one of the many models available at the time that would fit without defacing it?

What a waste! Has Dennis bid his standard $1 yet? Hopefully the person who picks it up can use it for parts...

I think the original pilot owner must have been flying some kind of open seated bi-plane or a microlight and the case refinish was done purely for aerodynamic reasons. I'm sure with this streamlined, not to mention light weight, version on the wrist there would have been a respectable fuel saving of perhaps a couple of gallons on a typical trans-atlantic trip :p
