New acquisition, on the smaller side but REALLY cool three hander ! Magnificent lugs, and nice original dial. I think nobody from OF bid too much because of the size. Patek Philippe ref 96 are on the small side and still in 5k range, IMHO this watch by UG is just as elegant. I had a 18k rose gold Vacheron Constantin I sold for $2500 many years ago that measured 31 mm.
This watch was a sleeper !

What do Patek Philippe ref 96 go for In Europe these days. The last one I saw on the bay 18k gold sold for 5k American dollars. Steel PP ref 96 are more expensive ! Are PP ref 96 really going lower. They used to be a premium. Sad to say,I own three vintage 18k PP and have 24k invested. Glad I started buying UG at the same time, vintage PP and Co. don't seem to have much interest in them unless it has complication ?

Remember Florent, I've been looking and collecting vintage watches for 40 years. I got my first Patek Philippe when I was 8 years old. I passed on many watches that are extremely valuable today because PP and Co were the most sought after watches when I was a child. My good friends father had an original PP ref 2499 from 1950 that is worth $$$$$$$ today. There was no internet, and the only way you saw vintage watches was by looking at what rich people were wearing, vintage watch books, and a few watch clubs. You could go to a Tiffany and Co store and look at PP, Vacheron, and maybe Piaget. Mostly dress watches. Hardly anybody wore a chronograph ! At my friends store there were James Bond Rolex Submariners, we didn't give them much attention! I only knew one old retired Air Force colonel that had a chronograph and it was a UG Tri-Compax. That was the first UG I ever saw, and my interest in UG started at that point, I was about 14 years old at that time. I'm 54 years old now !

The one I saw on eBay was probably a 18k calatrava 32 mm. Poor dial and it sold for 5k. Aesthetically I really believe that this 32mm steel UG is as elegant as the overpriced steel PP ref 96 that I've actually seen in person. The finish is obviously better on the PP movement, but the overall look is pretty plain, nice markers, but does it warrant 50 times the value ? I think not at this point in my collecting. It comes down to PP history and the fact very few stainless steel ones were produced. The one my father gave me is actually a small SS tank with 9-90. movement. Do vintage collectors even look very much at three hander PP anymore ? I have several, wish there was more interest in them. They sit on eBay and I doubt very many are sold ? Chronographs are where it's at in vintage watch collecting IMHO ! I passed on many UG Nina, and Eric CLapton Tri-Compax looking at dress PP that were boring old school 18k watches your dad and mine wore.
Does anyone really collect these old dress watches anymore ? I don't !

In the course of reading this thread I have gone from completely ignorant of UG watches to wildly obsessed. Nice work everyone ::rimshot::

Great post rolokr. Thanks for sharing.

Stainless steel one's are at least 10k. 18k Patek ref 96 are a lot more common and less $$$.

I like vintage chronographs, but it costs quite some money to get nice one. On the other hand, I also like vintage dress watches and they cost less! So yeah, I still do wear these old dress watches for work 😀
One day, I will get nice, honest UG chrono, but it's too expensive for me at the moment, and it's like minefield out there

It’s funny. Im new to the vintage watch collecting hobby and I completely find myself drawn in by the dress watches only. So in the last year I’ve acquired a dozen circa 1950,60 and early 70s JNC, UG, Omega, Rolex, and UN ...sure I have a few Chronographs and a new Sinn 556I... but I’m not a big tool watch guy so for me the functionality of the chrono is “lost” somewhat. (Although I do consider my Breitling Chronomat D13350 Watch quite dressy with its MOP dial dressed up in 18k gold...)....for me, each of my vintage dress watches just look so much better with my suit I wear daily for work or for dinner functions. And they all look so different from each other. The 1952 JNC Bradley II “ships wheel” looks nothing like my 1970 Connie C ... overall, IMHO the “dressy watches” that some/ many feel are outdated from a collectors standpoint - Exude charm and understatement. For me, it’s not about the whims of collectibility or even investment value over time. . Nor the chase or the “resurrection from the dustbin and repair to old glory angle” ( which I totally get) .. it’s just an old, 34-36mm well made watch that looks great and helps this investment advisor tell a story.
