Right going to do it - and get a Speedmaster. Question is do I get the beautiful boxed Speedmaster 1861 that comes with NATO straps, paperweight etc or the newer Speedmaster with that gorgeous new bracelet (3861)? The price difference is significant

If the cost is not a factor, then I would go for the new one. Both will serve you well irrespective of which one you choose. The only way to know which one is right for you is to try them both and buy the one you like the most; taking into account the price difference, if that is going to be the deciding factor.

I think you’re right. I really appreciated the No Time To Die in person when I went to see it at the Omega boutique. Within 30 mins I had got it. The price is a factor this time and the older one comes with more goodies. Tough one

Go for the old one, and if possible, buy a newer bracelet with some of the money you have saved. A win win situation.

For me, I’d go newer. All personal choice but I like just about all the updates and I think they are probably worth it to me.

Buy the old.

The new would be better, but too many bugs in the movement have surfaced for me to recommend it yet. Give it a few more years to iron out all the issues. The old one had decades of reliable operating and all new bugs were worked out in the first few years like the new one will.

The old one. No question in my mind.

It’s the closest to the original and tried and proven movement, unlike the new one

Both are great but we we on here can find fault with both so Occam’s razor says buy the cheapest.

I own an 1861 FOIS and a Hesalite 3861 Speedy Pro. The 3861 blows the 1861 out of the water on accuracy, you get hacking seconds and the bracelet is gorgeous. It’s a watch that wears smaller than its 42mm size would have you believe.

Go with your gut, but I’m very happy with the new Speedy.

Bollocks. They are as accurate as each other which is to say as well as they have been regulated. Neither are chronometer certified and the accepted tolerances are very wide.

I respect your opinion, @padders; I’m only going on my own experiences with the two watches. Obviously my FOIS is not yet at the stage where it needs to be serviced and regulated; but for me, out of the box, there is a clear difference.

I do believe, however, that the 3861 is chronometer certified.

I thought the new 3861 was chronometer certified?

Personally I prefer the older version, maybe it's been around so long it just looks more familiar to my eyes. Nothing wrong with the new one except for a higher price and a buggy (for now) movement. The bracelet on the new ones is a better execution but there are lots of options if you don't like the older version of the bracelet. I got along fine with it. The only 3861 I've owned was an Apollo 11 50th (now sold) but it was super reliable in the 2 1/2 years I owned it. I can't get too hung up on accuracy, a well regulated 1861 will run fine with little need to fiddle with it over a week or two, the 3861 is better in that regard but you are paying extra for the METAS certification. If accuracy is very important to you get the 3861, but in day to day use it's immaterial. Right now the 1861 is a better value but the prices are creeping up. If I was in the market for a first Speedmaster I'd go for the tried and true 1861, there are still some new ones floating around waiting to be snagged.

Hmmm Good point. I was hasty and rude in my reply I’ll admit. I also have a FOIS, mine runs very accurately even on my timing machine but Omega are happy if it runs plus 10s a day so not every user is quite as happy as me so maybe the 3861 does have an edge there.

No worries at all, @padders - as I say, your opinions carry a lot of weight around here and I respect that.
