I am wanting an Explorer 1 39mm I think it's a 214270. Can anyone give me advice as the one to have e.g. Any good years or updates. I read somewhere on the internet that the lume was updated in 2016???. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks
If you do a google search there are in depth articles by nearly all the big blog sites on Explorer history, models, variants, etc. Hodinkee and Fratello have several articles a piece. Happy googling
I have the 214270 (Mk1 [2010-2016] ) and wear it all days, the other watches get nearly no wrist time. When I wear another watch, I'm missing it immediately.. The 36mm seems to be the best dimension for the design, but wore to small on my wrist
I am pretty much inseparable from my 214270. It's 3132 movement is running somewhere around (but not more than) +10s/month. Mine is the 2016 with the small design tweaks including the lumed numerals. I freaking love this watch well beyond ways I could explain and not have family look at me funny! 6.5" wrist here. Love it on the NATO, especially in our 105 degree weather. It's a beast. A watch I'd buy again -- if I ever had to?! -- no hesitation at all. (Gratuitous working in of my 7-week old son. )
I have the Explorer 214720 Mk2 (released in Basel 2016). Classy, iconic watch...gets a significant amount of wrist time in my collection. Here is a lume shot of the Explorer (left) next to my Explorer 2 (right): I think it is a great option for a GADA watch and has timeless design.
Here you go after a very quick google search, give this one a quick glance. https://monochrome-watches.com/role...revious-214270-review-history-rolex-explorer/ First Exp through 214260 Mk 1 Lume shot of 214270 Mk 1 on left vs Mk 2 on right. Also notice larger hands.
Holly shit, I really didn't notice that much difference on the hand size difference until that last lume shot.
the lume shot is a bit deceiving as it only captures the lumed portion of the minute hand, the hand on the mk1 extends a bit further, covering the hour markers..
