One of my best friends of 10 years does a lot of work on watches for me (not a watchmaker but he’s very skilled). He has been with me through a divorce, has been there when I was down- he is the kind we all want as a close friend. This year I found myself with several silver dialed 60’s Seamasters- all different but almost redundant. He has a 2 year old, wife is a public middle school science teacher, and works for his small family business and needless to say- doesn’t make much money. I gave him one of my Seamasters this year for Xmas- I have several, so I don’t miss it and it meant the world to him.

Unless this friend is of that variety- keep the Speedmaster.

In all seriousness, if your buddy is just looking for “a Speedmaster” and isn’t an avid collector- this watch is more than he needs and you will miss it. Any post ‘72 would work for him and he can get a nice 90’s-00’s era one for the sub- $3.5k mark, serviced with full kit

I know I'm going against the grain here, but personally, I think that if your friend would take the -71, that might be a good option for you. I'm not sure I would feel the need to have two such similar watches, and the -71 would be hard to sell to a collector because of the incorrect case-back (assuming I'm reading the thread correctly).

i'm going one further, why not swap the dials and hands to your '69? both step and same font... just saying.

Mike,

Nice watches!! I prefer the 69 over the 71, just because it’s older.
If possible I should keep both, and trade in the 71 on another Speedmaster (e.g. Ed White) when you are ready for it.
