http://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-serial-numbers is the best source I can find, but I was wondering if there is an official Rolex database with 100% accurate information. I want to find the production year of my Rolex. The certificate says 1966, but it should be 1954 according to this source. The serial is 966,421. Really want to know what the real age is.

Rolex serial numbers were restarted (maybe even twice) from what I remember, so the serial number you have could correspond to both '54 and '66. You could post some pictures of the watch and we could probably make an assessment of what decade it came from.

Besides the one you already show in your thread, here's one that I've also used. http://qualitytyme.net/pages/numbers.html

Thanks! I was able to find a local Rolex dealer, and you were absolutely correct. It is an authentic Rolex. Thanks so much.

I go by both SN and the style and specific markings of the watch to date it accurately.

This page compiles the information from several other websites into one:

    http://www.oysterinfo.de/en/detailinfos/seriennummern/

There is an illustrative graph on the site that correlates the distribution of serial numbers and known production dates from casebacks (IV 58, II 65, etc.)

Until Rolex stops acting like the old Soviet Union and opens up its records, this is likely the best we'll ever get.

Hey Rolex, we really aren't the enemy, you know?

Good info. Regarding where to find the serial number on your Rolex watch there are a few places you can look depending on the model year.

The Rolex serial numbers are found between the lugs on the side of the case at the 6 o'clock side, behind the bracelet. This 4-8 digit number is engraved by Rolex on every watch and it can be used to determine its production date. Beginning in 2005, the Company started to also engrave the serial number on the inside flange ( or “rehaut” as its called in French ) between the dial and the crystal. Starting in 2008, the Company began to only engrave the numbers on the rehaut.
