Does Omega put out information about what year a particular watch is made and how many were produced that year? I'm not talking about vintage...I'm just talking about my new SMP 300m. I'm curious about how long it might have been sitting in the display case. Is there somewhere I can enter the serial number for this information?

The serial no should give you the year of manufacture of the movement & if you want to know when it was delivered to the seller you will have to get an extract from the archives (although they don't always have that information).

Probably 2008/9. I'd have to double check tomorrow when I can get to the relevant book.

Last S/N recorded by AJTT is 79,XXX,XXX and 80,XXX,XXX as year 2006. With steady 2 million S/N per year since 2002, we can assume
    81 & 82 is 2007, 83 and 84 is 2008, 85 and 86 is 2009.
    This is just approximation.

No I am saying it should be from 2009 approximately. Picture above is from AJTT A Journey Through Time, an Omega bible.

These numbers are totally unreliable for very modern Omegas. It is likely OttawaMan's watch was made somewhere between 2011-2012

My understanding was that the SMP-C was introduced at Besel 2011. Not being familiar with turn-over rates at AD's, do you think it would sit in a display case for 2 years?

Cool...good to know. Not sure if I should start another thread or not..but this is my first quality watch...and I have many questions. My latest question is can I change the strap? ie: I have the SMP 300m Pro with the James Bond (God! I hate saying that...sounds so gimmicky) stainless strap....would I have options to swap out into say, a black leather strap? Or does the structure of the watch just not work with a leather strap?

Sure, those are pretty much standard lugs so you could put a strap in place of the bracelet. Rubber, leather, a mesh band..... it's all good. Check to see what the width is between the lugs (I think it's 20 mm) so you order the correct size.

Yes, and of course it does not have to be an Omega brand strap so that gives you many more quality and cheaper choices.

I like your SMP. How do you like the ceramic bezel? I wish I could retro-fit my 2254 with one and a silicone hairspring too.

Having just done an inventory check recently, the spread of serial numbers is extremely wide, I don't think a serial number can be used as a good approximation of when a watch was assembled. To the OP, a popular model like an SMP would not have sat in a window for 2 years for any dealership with a decent turnover of stock

My wife's 2011 Aqua Terra is 9056xxxx so does that mean a 8618xxxx would have been made in approximately 2009 or is there no relation between significantly different movements?

I have a 2254 and I have it on a black Omega Isofrane style strap, I really like the look but its not everyone taste ;)
