I like many others sometimes get drawn into thinking that a "careful" clean up of a dial will surely improve things....I have attempted one or two in the past and never really had the success I was hoping for, sometimes making things worse as a result.

Let this thread serve as a warning to the DIY cleaners amongst us, some things are just better off left alone!

I'll start with this one which has just closed on Ebay, An 18kt "Constellation" De Luxe dial, or actually as it now stands an 18kt "ostel" dial  The wipe marks are still visible and I can almost see the horror in the face of the "cleaning technician" reflected on the mirrored surface of the dial as all those little letters and minute markers floated away!

if you aquire such a dial - what would you recommend. leaving it as it is or having it fully repainted?

Only the person who would purchase that dial knows the answer that question..

If it is in this shape?
    Mmmm, pass altogether?
Although the 'Ostell"-dials may fetch a nice return in future

BTW: I like this thread: thanks for bringing this up @cristos71

Knowing what we all know now in 2017 I'd pass. But years ago in about 2005 or 6 I bought a 2853 De Luxe with a redial, I knew what I was buying, but that was the first De Luxe I'd ever actually seen in real life and I wanted one so bad that I bought it anyway....the price at the time was also pretty good IIRC :D

I enjoyed it for quite a few years until digital macro photography, Internet Forums and my knowledge had grown enough to realise that redials had no place in my collection.

What a shame. I'd say leave it as is.

That story reminds me so much of how I ended up with my first girlfriend its scary, thankfully we both learned from our first experiences and became wiser.
