If you're familiar with the movie Gone in 60 Seconds, you know what I'm talking about. In other terms, what is your white whale, the watch that eludes your grasp? Doesn't matter the reason why - which watch do you lust after, maybe to be the crown jewel of your collection, that is tormenting you? (this may be geared more towards vintage collectors but anyone can comment)
Damn hard question... I love the Patek 5712 but its not my all-time favorite, I like some vintage Rolex pieces, the Paul Newman Daytona springs to mind as an example, but its too small at 36mm for a sports watch and not elegant enough to be a dress watch. I like the Pie-Pan Constellation grand-lux but could never wear it any day. The Omega Anakin and Darth Vader are amazing, as is the Flightmaster but they're a door-jam magnet, as is a Ploprof 600/1000. I think the winner is the CK2915, the original Speedmaster with Broadarrow hands, chocolate dial, original bracelet, and Cal 321 movement. Incidentally, the better condition chocolate CK2915's have sold at auction for similar, or greater money than a Paul Newman Daytona, as for which is the better chronograph? Well, at 42mm this one certainly looks more the part, is more aggressive, and has more character, more 1950s and less 1970s than a Paul Newman. Lastly, why would you want to follow the crowd, and be worshipped by the vintage Rolex nerds, when you can be the only guy at the vintage meet with a '57 Speedmaster.
I'd say that's a wise choice for an ultimate vintage piece to aspire to. The Ahab in me has been blessed with a handful of uncommon and legitimately rare watches. But, it's not like I was chasing all of them for years. I didn't even have the Seamaster pie pan on my most wanted list because I never thought I'd see one in person (except for the museum in Bienne if I ever went). I did want a caliber 504 eventually, but getting Desmond's 2943 with the black dial made me ecstatic. (reminded him of my lust for that watch every few months ) Felt very lucky to get the AP 5279 caliber K2120 although that was dumb luck combined with elite deal seeker and fortuitous timing. However, the white whale that eludes me is a late 50's/early 60's Longines Conquest Power Reserve caliber 294 - in 18ct white gold. I've passed on a few stainless models and even a yellow gold one. I don't even know if any white gold versions exist anymore but the 294 slot in my collection will remain open until I find a suitable example. If I settle for another metal than white gold it had better be perfect.
to be honest with you I'm just hoping to get my great grandfathers pocket watch. My Eleanor arrived with my 6th purchase (A Hamilton Dunkirk). Dennis, what about that LeCoultre Chrono?
I don't know. I usally get what I want, just sometimes I have to wait a little longer and unfortunately or fortuneaterly whichever way you look at it all watches are my Elinore's, because I want them all...lol Right now I am on a hunt for a speedy, but with me if something else comes along ...who knows.
Do you mean the Futurematic? If so, they come around once in a while. If you mean the JLC Geomatic chronometer, that's a little tougher and more expensive - but still occasionally available.
Can your Eleanor be a collection ??... To celebrate the Speedmaster’s lengthy service history, as well as its 40th anniversary, Omega released just forty of a special edition box set in 1997 containing all twenty-two mission-patch Speedmasters. For every one of the NASA’s missions where the Speedmaster was worn, the dial was emblazoned at nine o’clock with the mission patch, and so too are the watches in this collection. The set also includes a replica of the very first Speedmaster, commonly known as the ‘broadarrow’ due to its distinctively shaped hands.
Doesn't every Rolex take 2 years, 100 workers, and the souls of 2 Unicorns to construct? ... Meanwhile, in reality:
How about this man: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/15076376...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_4738wt_1228Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network Now my Arabic is slightly rusty but I'm 99% sure that says Dennis on the dial, possibly Sultan Dennis from the UAE if I had to guess, but that'd be pretty impressive, a C-case with your name on the dial.
What a shame that the bracelet is missing and the dial has that added text. I'd rather have Mystic High Ruler than my name.
Hmmmmm......A Breitling Black Steel Avenger would be nice, and for dress how about an IWC Frank Jones???? PS, my birthday is the 23rd, so you guys have ample time to do your shopping!!
Here's another fish story. The seller had a change of heart last year. I still have dibs on it (I hope). It would make the perfect 1 -2 combo with my white dialed automatic Genève. Kyle - you'll know this watch. The owner lives in Philly.
