What's the (legal?) situation on tritium?

Hi there just wondering... Has tritium been outlawed ?

It seems it was last used (on a wider scale) in the mid 90ies.

I assume legal problems, otherwise I'm sure there would be some of the micro brands be pushing it...

    What's the skinny?

Well there's sometimes Tritium in drinking water... seriously I don't know if it's still produced to be used as self-illuminating stuff :coffee:

Tritium is still widely used in watches, but not in the form most here are familiar with - they use it in self contained tubes...

Tritium is also still used in firearms manufacturing, mainly for night glowing sights. At least in the US.

Why was tritium removed from watch lume in the manner done in the past? Because of radiation concerns?

Indeed, licking tritium brushes wasn't good for one's health... nowadays there're other alternatives for self-illuminating stuff :taunt:

My understanding is that with the half life issues of tritium, luminova lasts much longer and is a superior solution. Sure you have to charge luminova but you don't have to reapply it every decade.

The German Federal Ministry for the Environment had drafted a proposal paper to ban Tritium from consumer goods /foodstuff that also includes the use of safe Gaseous Tritium Light Source (GTLS ) but 2 Swiss companies manufacturers of the US brand Luminox & Traser watches respectively have protested & ironically found support within the German Scientific community & Politicians . Their arguments against the propose ban are

●further lost of thousands of jobs especially in the current economic downturn of the Swiss Watch Industry

●The inevitable rise in tritium filled microvials in the grey and black markets. Luminox & Tresor brands would be absolutely pissed off because they would now lose their monopoly on the GTLS

Realistically you cannot really enforce Tritium ban in a borderless world & Seriously.... Which moronic fool is going to outlaw tritium on the Internet ???

Ok. Here's the customary tritium lume of my brother's Luminox ANU 4221 that will continue to glow for the next 23 yrs[IMG]p/s : The macro or microbrand with the best tritium lume is the American company based in NYC - Deep Blue Watches

If you want to try the other end of the spectrum (so to speak), try these:
