Hey guys, when I first saw this photo I thought he was wearing a 1035/1039. Some time later after revisiting the photo, it is indeed not the case. Anyone know what he's wearing in his official astronaut photo? Cheers all!
In about 90% of all photos, Cernan is seen wearing his wristwatch on the inner wrist. According to the original NASA listing, Cernan was using a 105.003 on Gemini IX, a 105.012 on Apollo 10 and a 145.012 on Apollo 17. That list will be updated by a NASA-NASM-Omega team by the end of this year... This NASA portrait was made in 1971 and shows some kind of "elastic" bracelet... at that time Cernan had been training as a backup for Apollo 14, but later during training for Apollo 17, he was pictured wearing a Rolex wristwatch .
Certainly an interesting band... It's interesting as he's synonymous with Omega. Having said that, Shepard and Mitchell were avid GMT wearers, not sure if that had any bearing on him wearing them as back up for some reason? Interesting viewing nonetheless, thanks for the input.
Synonymous with Omega now but not when this picture was taken. Cernan didn't begin his relationship as a brand ambassador with Omega until 2000. Shepard and Mitchell are only two of many Gemini and Apollo astronauts that chose the Rolex 1675 GMT as their personal watch in addition to the issued Speedmasters. By my count only Mitchell, Evans, Swigert, and Schweickart wore or took a Rolex GMT on their missions. EDIT - Spelling
