What would you do, if you would like to have the one and only Moonwatch?

    Hi you all!

I would like to have a modern Moonwatch—as close as possible to the ”first watch worn on the Moon”:
What would you do? Which model to choose?
This one currently on sale (pic attached) or would you wait for the limited Apollo 11th edition (it will be more expensive)? Or would you choose some other model?

I'd probably go for the hesalite and put funds I saved from purchasing the sapphire to a DSOTM. :D

The one you're showing is the first one I bought, and what I'd recommend you buy. There's something about starting out with a classic, iconic design - you can always branch out from there (and I have), but start with the perennial favorite and enjoy.

I chose a different model, but it's all Speedmaster and just a little bit more legible.

If you decided to go for a 'modern' Moonwatch, then take the classical Speedmaster Professional .

It has been 'modern' since 1963 now.

I think you can't go wrong with it.

If it was me, I would look for an earlier one in good and serviced condition.

You might as well wait a few months and see what the Apollo XI limited editions (I would think there will be more than one of them) cost/are like. The .005 isn't going to go anywhere in the meantime; you can always go back to it.

Modern 3 subdial hesalite Speedy is as close a you can get. But if getting the watch worn on the moon is where you want to be...ya gotta go vintage

The modern hesalite-crystal, solid-caseback Speedmaster Professional is the only one of the line still certified for space travel (and the only watch certified for EVA) - the Apollo XI 50th, even if it is a 1:1 reproduction of the 105.012s worn on the lunar surface, will not be. So if you want to own just one modern Speedmaster, the standard one is it

New Speedy Pro hesalite on a JB Champion bracelet. That's where I ended up. I started with a 145.012 and unfortunately sold it. But that route is a LOT more expensive (as will be the 50th Apollo XI version).

I've been back on forth on this loads. I really like the vintage look but the price not so much.

I have Broad arrow 3594, which is great, but hasn't scratched that 'classic' speedmaster itch.

I have been hankering after a 3572 or 3592 but still keep coming back to the the one you have shown. I think it is the best starting point. If the collecting disease ends up afflicting you, it would still be a good one to have in the collection.

Right, it seems I've just talked myself into buying one now!! Think I might pop to my AD this weekend!!

This will sound like an echo but I'd suggest the watch you pictured. At the very least it's a fantastic watch in general, and it can represent where the speedmaster was when you started collecting speedmasters, later down the road. Aside from that its hard for anyone to tell you what you want. Also this is assuming you do not own any other speedys since you didnt include any other info.

If you want to wear a watch like Neil did then you have to get the one pictured. As cool as vintage is, they weren't wearing 50 year old watches on the moon. Vintage is for nostalgia (I love nostalgia) but the Apollo astronauts were wearing new. The coolest thing about Omega is that you can get extremely close to buying a new watch that was the same model worn on the moon.

I prefer the smaller Speedy cases, 38.6 - 39.7mm, with straight lugs and no crown guards, which means the FOIS or the 60th Anniversary. I don't like the hands or the sapphire crystal of the FOIS so it is the 60th Anniversary re-issue 2915-1 Speedy for me. I actually own one and am very happy with it, but it is really not a true Moonwatch. The Moonwatch I would love, which doesn't exist yet, would be a re-edition of the 105.003, Gene Cernan's Speedy and I believe may also be the "Ed White", powered by the reincarnated 321. That Moonwatch would have the case I prefer, a hesalite crystal, black bezel, a 321 movement, and in its original form went to the moon on Cernan's wrist, although his version wasn't the first.

I did it... visited my lovely AD.... And what a lovely shopping experience: no waitinglists, no difficulties at all: Just walk in and buy the watch you’ve been thinking!

Just a stunning watch! I love the feel; simplicity and honesty to the original one. The dial is very crisp and clear even to my older eyes. I’ve seen and tried many LE-speedmasters, but I have have to say: many of these LE-models has felt more like toys... this Moonwatch is The Speedmaster to me at the moment!
Sorry for bad nighttime photos—just wanted to share rightaway. Thank you all for your thoughts—you’ve helped a lot to make up my mind!!

Well done for making a decisive decision. It's a rabbit hole you can disappear down whilst trying to make a decision and sometimes impossible to come up for air. I applaud you for being a decision maker. In 50 years time , you'll remember the day you bought it and smile . Enjoy
