Took a gander at the price list over at Speedmaster 101, and it appears that a decent Ed White goes for between $10,000 and $20,000 currently.

I bought a decent example for about $2,000 roughly 15 years ago, but would have a tough time shelling out that kind of money for one now.

What watch did you buy at a great price, and realize you would probably never buy again at today's prices?

    Probably this one:

Although I was offered almost £6000 more than I paid less than a year ago for this:

Then again, there are a few others that aren't selling even though I've offered them up.

Fakk my old boots! It's Biffo the Bear!... and Mini the Minx. I used to give Biffo the 'elbow' and go straight for The Bash Street Kids or Dennis the Menace. @jimmyd13!
Now they had Biffo on the front of The Beano and Korky the Cat on the front of The Dandy.

My Dad always bought the two comics as a pair if I was off of school with tonsilitis. Funny old memory you've stirred Jimmy, because I loved those comics, but I hated Biffo and Korky. Even as a 6 or 7 year old I can remember thinking... "why do they put them pair of twats on the front cover?" :D

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and state that these comic references might be mostly unknown to most US members? Looks fun though...

Premoon for sure. I bought one two years ago on ebay under $3k(and I was the only bidder as well...the seller had it titled wrong). I was sweating it all the way to my door. He was having major sellers regret over his mistakes in the listing, but he ultimately honored it. I would never pay what they go for today. These may be famous last words. Today may be cheap compared to two years from now.

One of the dealers came in with that old Beano annual ... the thing was, it was my birthday that very day ... and I was born in 1971. He just said that it was obviously meant for me and gave it to me with a simple "Happy birthday". See ... we're not all heartless, money-grabbing fargin iceholes.

Of course, I didn't tell him that I always bought Whizzer & Chips (because it was cheaper than the Beano).

I don't think I am going to buy any more 5513s unless I find them at a barn for pennies. Shelling out $10k+ for starter (non-perfect) vintage subs and GMTs is getting a little crazy.

Didn't exactly make a killing on these, but bought them about 10 years and soon after convinced myself they were too big for me. I now really regret letting them go, I love the Speedmaster these days and I'm much more comfortable with the size.

Sadly I don't think I'll ever be replacing these two at today's/future prices.

Agreed. I've always wanted a 5513, but I really can't justify $10,000 on a basic Submariner. Especially being that 99% of them seem to have either lost their lume pip or have a modern replacement. Some people don't mind, but that would bother the heck out of me for that amount of money.

I'm now chasing a 1016 instead... these seem to have stayed a little more stable. And the lack of an external bezel means there's one less thing to worry about. Just has to tick two boxes: 1) attractive lume plots, and 2) unpolished (relatively).

Mine bothered me ... for about 3 minutes. I hate replacement parts on a watch but, probably perversely, I don't mind in the least if they carry scars, dents or bruises. The "220" that I bought from a member here is probably a perfect example. It's all original with a period correct bracelet that I bought later, yet there's a dent at the 9 o clock. I did ask about repairing it but was told that the dent has been there years; the insert is also dented and discoloured at that point; and, any "repair" would probably look worse. That's when I settled back and decided it was just part of the watch's story.

Late to collecting so i didn't have any $500 UG Tri Copax etc. so it would be this 2998-6 I picked up in Paris back in 2015. I have invested in a full overhaul of the movement and left the rest in raw form. It's not perfect but it's not going anywhere.

I definitely don't disagree with you. In general, dents, nicks, fading, etc. all tend to add to a watches charm. But specifically when a lume pip is absent, it just leaves this gaping hole in the bezel, front and center at the 12 o'clock position, that I can never look past.

    P.S nice Speedy!

A mid-1980s Rolex Daytona Oyster Cosmograph that I bought in 1989, and sold two years ago. I won't mention prices in case the new owner posts here. After owning it for about 26 years, I had worn it less than a year. For that reason, I sold it. Why buy another?

None, I'd have caught feelings and not been willing to sell anyway.

Better to think of that dent as a 'good honest Battle scar' as the watch made it's way through life. I look at that dent and wonder about how it happened? Trying to imagine what would have dented the bezel in that way without breaking the glass? It's a robust 'Omega Speedmaster Professional' that has, taken a knock but, carried on doing it's job because, inside and outside, it is a quality timepiece.
I don't really see it as a flaw. lt's part of what makes these watches special.

Lovely watch! I love those flat link bracelets. :)
