Came across this today from a local auction house.. 2914-3 .. dated to 1958 16,6mil serial.
The spots that you can see in the dial is from lume? I guess thats lying loose on the dial.. Two spots on the dial is "stuck".. but hopefully the most of it can be removed with some love and a brush..

    What do you guys think? He's open for offers :) 2015-03-16-6.jpg 2015-03-16-7.jpg 2015-03-16-8.jpg 2015-03-16-9.jpg 2015-03-16-10.jpg

The dial? It always look a little worse on these macro pictures compared to when you have it in front of you but I can agree with you.. the spots on the dial isn't flattering, but after some gentle shaking the spots have lost some of the lume that was stuck, so hopefully the brownish lume can be removed .. but I'm guessing it will be som sort of damage under the lume..

What do you think would be a fair offer to the auctioneer?

Ive seen plenty worse...if the price is right its a rather interesting look. As an investment, no...but to enjoy, yes if the price is right.

Well, Im not the investment guy so with that over done with, I'm gonna go with the other choice you had there.
Would you think that it would be a good price if were possible to grab it for under $3,000?

the dial has a problem. min. one; maybe 2 rust spots. that is a sign, that it will get worse in that area. the lume spots will cause white/lighter colour spots on the dial. that is quite normal for that age. you have to secure the existing lume on the hands. use water based tritium and apply from the back of the hand to secure the original lume. new crystal with wide silver rehaut and a light case (matte`) polish and you have a nice watch. try to buy it. values are really depending on having it in your hand; see the blemishes, the movement, the inner amag. cage and inner back. and everything else. go for a good example`s value in the last 12 months and deduct 25%. then you have a winner. good luck ! kind regards. achim

Well, the spots your referring as rust I think isn't rust, but thats just a guess. The watch has been laying still for quite a long time and some material from the indexes has somehow managed to gather as a little "pile" on these two places is my guess.. After a while on the arm these "rust" spots has decreased in size and now the material from these spots is all över the dial instead. But the there is still some material left on the spots, for sure. Would be nice to have it opened and cleaned, if I now manage to buy this piece. Great advice regarding the hands! Thanks.

I've had the opportunity to borrow the watch for some days to take some pictures and so :)

Here you have some more pictures.

pretty good so far. once you have a rust spot on the dial, it will get downhill from there. it is easy to take the mvmt. incl. the cage out of the case; just loose the stem screw and out is comes. then try with a fine artist brush to loosen the bigger spots and have a look, what is underneath..... kind regards. achim

That's a nice auctioneer you have there. I'd like to borrow it for a few months after you're done. :)
