What do you listen to your music on?

I have to say there is some great kit being show on this thread and it doesn't matter whether you stream, use physical digital media, still have a lump of diamond rubbing along in a vinyl groove or some oxide coated tape running over a magnetic head, the point is to just enjoy the music.

Great thread. Right now we're using a mix of Sonos, Google Home, various Bose Bluetooth speakers, and various headphones. A toddler in the house makes buying a nice separates setup a bad idea at the moment. There's also the fact that I can't stop remembering the HiFi magazine test where "audiophiles" couldn't tell the difference between ridiculously expensive, sealed, oxygen free cabling and a straightened coat hanger. I have a military aircrew medical. There's nothing wrong with my hearing whatsoever...it's probably better than most. I've also played guitar for 30 years. Would I still buy some really nice speakers? Undoubtedly!

I'm using an old school Musical Fidelity X-A2 amp that I picked up second hand for a total bargain to drive my speakers, and a Little Dot valve headphone amp driving Sennheiser HD-600s. Hmmm valves....

No please don't go down the cable difference route, this thread will descend into chaos...😉

I was happily cranking “Song Remains the same” last night ... wife says to me “When you retire is this going to be an all day thing?” You went to too many concerts in your youth, you don’t know what loud is any more.” ( my whole rig is configured to do loud really well) Perhaps I need to install that headphone pre amp though. 🙁

If it’s too loud, you’re too old!

My S8 plus Samsung phone with Sony XBass Headphones
Ditto. Maybe one of these days I'll find time (and inclination) to get a badass sound system like some have here. For now I am content with keeping status quo.

Found some photos of slightly older stuff I used to have. My equipment is mostly been a mix of Canadian and UK manufacturers (after my early Japanese stuff that is). Audio industry here in Canada was once thriving, and to a degree it still is, but some companies have either folded or been bought up as interest in audio seems to be lacking. When home theatre really started to take off, the pure audio folks seemed to take a back seat, and I think this also contributes to the decline somewhat.

Anyway, here's a previous system...

Components are here:

So Arcam Alpha 9 CD player, Moon i5 integrated amp, Panamax power conditioner, and that old dubbing tape deck at the bottom.

Speakers were Mirage OM5's, and were their flagship speakers at the time. Designed and built in Canada, and the advantage with that was evident the time I spent about an hour speaking to the guy that designed these at a local show, sketching out my room on a napkin and talking about speaker placement...

They are a little different...bi-polar design that Mirage called "Omni-polar" so as these photos I found on the internet show, there were drivers on both front and back of the cabinet:

The two woofers were driven by an integrated 250 watt amp built into each speaker - they weighed 92 pounds each, so not lightweight. The idea was to use direct and reflected sound off the back wall to give a better reproduction of live music. The problem was that to work properly they had to be much further out from the wall than I was able to practically have them, and my wife even hated how far out they are in the photo above.

The amount of bass and the crossover frequency could be tweaked via 2 adjustments at the back of each speaker - you can just see them here:

Interesting designs for their time I think, and as most of my equipment was back then, seemed to punch above it's price point in terms of the performance.

Anyone else had or have anything unusual like this?

Cheers, Al

Some nice stuff you all show overhere👍
Great minds think alike!

This setup has been in use for many years now, the latest serious addition was the Mytek in 2013. The speakers and amplifiers I have for more than 20 years now, I don’t think I ever get bored with these amps and speakers.

Speakers: Bowers & Wilkins 804 Matrix
Amplifiers: Bowers & Wilkins MPA1
Speakercable: MIT
Balanced interconnects: Mogami W2534 Neglex - Furutech XLR

Dac: Mytek 192 stereo DSD
Powercable: Furutech

Bowers & Wilkins MPA1 monoblock, built by Rotel under specs for B&W especially for this 8 series. I also have the low pass filter for these speakers but unable to use in current setup.

Furutech plugs and power cable, I really love their quality(sound wise I don’t hear any difference 😁)

Server i7 6700K - MSI Z170A SLI Plus - Transcend 256 GB MTS800 M.2 SSD - HQPlayer custom build.
This upsamples everything to max 512 DSD but with this dac to 128 DSD.

HQPlayer NAA Butchered Mac mini 2006 - Core Duo 1.66 🤨without fan, airport, bluetooth, CD rom and case. this feeds a firewire signal to the mytek.

No Bryston. And yes the Moons were good - still have the i5 and one of these days I'll get it on Canuck Audio Mart and get it sold, along with a bunch of speaker cable and interconnects I have surplus!

Wouldn't call it a "big" difference but sound is subjective. My XD10 was purchased 1 or 2 years after buying the Marantz and E100 as a kind of upgrade and the difference was noticeable but not that significant to me.

I don't recommend buying a 25 year old XD10 unless tested and reconditioned because the units manufactured at that time didn't have on/off switches so you could be buying one that the previous owner kept powered on for decades.

Fair enough. Thanks for the reply.

I didn’t realise that there was no on/off switch so fully appreciate there’s a risk if buying something like that now. TBH there’s not a lot wrong with my current CD set up. Appreciate the comment about the subjectivity of sound.

I guess it’s back to good old fashioned auditioning of new kit if I wanted an upgrade 😀

Sooooo I've done a bit of a reverse ferret and acquired a set of QuietComfort II's for an upcoming trip.
Initial thoughts are they're obv a quality product, the noise cancelling is great. The sound seems to be better than I had previously thought, maybe there's been a driver upgrade since the mk1s? Currently, for pure listening the P5s are still the fav, however shall be spending a lot of time with these.
[Edit - spent all day listening to them and the B&W's definitely have the richer more involved sound to my ears ]

On the downside, the case is a pretty poor show by comparison, there is some ' insert ' that I've already lost twice that stops them moving around and the 8mm cable supplied looks like an after thought so that's been chucked for a proper one.

Overall, very pleased with them, hopefully thats the lot for impulse purchases.
