I was given a very nice old watch that I will get restored as I really like the look of it but would like to know more about it. Here is what I know so far 1. It is a Omega Constellation from 1960's. 2. It has date and no markings at the 3 position other than 2 dots on the slope of the pie pan shape. 3. There is no magnification of the date. The crown is a conventional style with an omega symbol on the top. 4. The face has no numbers only raised gold markers for every number except 12 which is a double marker and 3 which is the date window. 5. the back is stainless steel with a gold observatory logo in the middle and is the screw in type. Here are some photos, does anyone know what I have?

You have an Omega Constellation, which likely dates back to the mid-60s. You’ll need to look at the serial number on the movement to get a more accurate idea of when it was manufactured.

It’s one of the bigger Constellation models produced and features a cal. 561 movement. It’s hard to tell on my phone but it appears to be the 14k gold cap bezel and stainless steel back combination, with a semi hidden crown.

You can do a google search of Omega 168.004 for more info on the watch.

168.004 is the model. The serial is on the movement. As well as the movement number.

Good news is the movement is Chrono grade as it should be.

well I've learned something important today. When you open the back off your omega make sure you get ALL the numbers before you close it up again! Found the serial number 23611587 and the cal 561 . What does that tell me about things like watch bands and glass ect. When I have it restored wouldn't mind knowing what it should be restored back too

Well it is certainly a very nice gift.
    Probably around 1966/67
Could do with hi-res pics of the dial to confirm all is correct.
The little index is missing from the 3 spot - it may be difficult to find a replacement. (Likely gold indices with black onyx inserts )
When you say ‘restore’ - all the watch requires is a service by a competent watchmaker.
The crystal doesn’t look too bad - does it have a little Omega symbol in the centre?
This can be polished or replaced at service.
There is no specific strap for Connies - with gold black or brown works just as well - 18mm lug width - but keep it simple.

If you haven’t found this site have a read.
Not a lot about .004s IIRC but tells you all about Constellations

Thanks I saw on the Omega site they have a restoration price where they replace polish and fix the watch to almost new starting price $2200 au dollars and being the watch of a departed family friend having it done would be a new life for the old watch and maybe I could pass it on when I kick the bucket to someone who too would appreciate the style

On a more serious note - don't send it to Omega as they will destroy its vintage character by replacing all the bits that make the watch special.
(and charge you a fortune for the privilege)
From what I can see - You have a nice honest watch. (better pics of the dial please! )
It's not pristine (it has seen some polishing) so not top value - but it is nice and this watch isn't about value as you've said.
it only needs servicing (no polishing) - and possibly the crystal replacing, and it will last another 50 years

A service should cost around US$200-300 (don't know what that is in AU$)

The tricky bit will be finding the missing index.
If you were in the UK I would suggest sending it to STS as they seem to be able to source all sorts of weird and wonderful bits for watches - incl indices.
They are a little bit more expensive but it may be your best option if you can't find an alternative.
Perhaps one of your fellow countrymen can recommend someone similar in Oz

Much better pictures - thank you.
    The dial looks spot on.
    Fonts are good.
A little bit of bubbling but nothing to worry about.
Now just to find that pesky missing short index

Is that something that they will look at when servicing in Switzerland ( Sydney Omega office said that they would send it to Omega Switzerland to be serviced) starting price $800 au. You made me rethink the restoration by the way
