There's a slide copying attachment, but I think Al meant a macro rail, which is essential for focusing in high magnification macro photography.

I have been using my Nexus 5 for WUW shots. I will soon have a Nexus 6 :). Should get it next week.

I do have a Cannon T3i that I periodically use for watch shots.

It's a dovetail slide that mounts to a tripod, and has a fine adjustment that allows for very precise focusing. Essentially it just allows you to move the camera very small amounts in a very controlled fashion along the axis of the lens. This is with an older camera body, but it gives you an idea what my set-up looks like on the tripod with the slide, extension tubes, and macro lens:

When bored at the house I use a Nikon D300 w a 105mm Macro; when on the road stuck in traffic, my iPhone and Snapseed app does the trick like this one..

For selling, eBay etc I do have a great setup I got as I made a little money as a photographer. A Canon 1dx and a number of lenses. But for everyday What are you wearing today and other posts I use the iPhone camera. It really is more about playing a little with the angle of the watch to avoid reflections or to get interesting flare effects. Here are some iPhone examples. No added kit. Sometimes jus use a filtering effect to enhance light, or use a mirror to get an angle. At close range the camera will distort...use that to your advantage by getting on the same level as your subject. Even on blurred backgrounds be mindful of what is behind or around the watch and also use it for effect.

I take most of my watch photos with my phone, but I also use an older Sony Cybershot when I am home and have some extra time. As others have said, the trick is in the lighting.
