What are your thoughts on owning both the PO 2500 and the P0 8500?

Was wondering what everyone thinks of owning the PO 2500 (2201.50.00) and the PO 8500 (232.30.42.21.01.001)?

Too redundant or just different enough?

Well it is certainly not the same as owning an 861 Speedmaster and an 1861 Speedmaster. Nor is it the same as owning a vintage Ploprof and a modern Ploprof.

I owned the 2500. I sold mine as it had an over polished case. I actually also owned the 8500 as well, but sold it after a month, as I could not get over the thickness. I would have replaced it with a 2500, but I became more mesmerized by Speedmasters.

I decided I would get my Seamaster fix by a pair of Ploprofs.

Too similar in my eyes... I'd rather use the money for something substantially different to add to the collection.

I am digging those Ploprofs! I am going to jump into Speedmaster territory after I get my Seamaster fix. haha

Perfect pic to demonstrate the size difference of the POs by the way. The 8500 looks very thick next to the 2500. I love the bezel and dial of the 8500, but I love the thinness of the 2500D. I wish the 8500 was a thin as the 2500D, that would be perfect.

Yes!! This is the general consensus for those that are Planet Ocean fans. I understand the 2500 LE is what you are describing...I have never seen one in real life, but that might be worth checking out.

This one sold, but take a look.

For me, it's the 2201.50 (2500D) hands down. The original classic and the dimensions are just perfect. It's the most beautiful diver out there and I LOVE it. Sell your 8500 and diversify!

They are redundant to each other IMHO. Yes the 8500 has the slightly better dial, and more technologically advanced movement, but they are at the end of the day the same watch with 1 huge difference. If you ever see both side to side the thickness of the 8500 is hard to get past. I actually prefer the bezel on the 2500 as it directly ties back to the original 300m, and if I dare say it is more true in some ways to the 300m then the 300MC.

I hate to say this to the 8500 owners out there, but with the 3rd gens out, and then also being thinner, the 8500 has sort of become the also ran. Yes there are some killer versions out there, with great dial and bezel combos (all blue ceramic), but the regular ones I feel will become unloved, with the 1st gen 2500 (esp 2500d) at 42mm going to be future collectables. Heck I own a 3313 1st gen POC and as great of a watch as that is, I will admit that in the future the black dial, white numbers 2500 at 42mm is going to be the most valuable PO out there.

    PS
I never noticed that the 2500LE had the 2nd gen style bezel and not the 1st gen style bezel. Not sure how I feel about that as it no longer mimics the 300m bezels.

I agree with you on the 2500d being more collectible and valuable in the future. It's a great watch. But I really love the brushed grey bezel of the 8500 and if it that style were available in the newest version (8900) I would get that, but it's not, unfortunately.

I have never tried the 8500 42mm on, but I have tried the new 8900 43.5mm, it is only 1 mm thinner, but I couldn't even feel the weight of it on my wrist and it didn't look bulky at all. So I'm hoping that the 8500 42mm will behave in the same manner.

This is my first watch purchase, so I keep flip flopping. I want them all!!! haha That's why I was seriously considering getting both watches.

The only thing I don't like about the 8500 is that the bezel is actually gray and not black. The bezel click action is not that good either.

hahaha that's what I do like about the 8500. :) I need to go find a 2500 and 8500 somewhere, so I can test them out in person. I didn't realize the click action was so different.

    Foo2rama -

Did they have a 8500 42mm at the OB at South Coast when your buddy was looking for a PO?

Yes, orange bezel or orange numbers black bezel. I forget which. They might still have the grey bezel white Number there that they had brought in.

    You can call them.
