Why do so many people black out serial numbers on their watches in picture. What are the risks of reveling a serial number in to the "wild"?

I searched the forum for a similar post but was unable to find one. So sorry for the newby question.::shy::

As far as I know The problem is that that fakers may use the serial numbers to put them on their fake watches. Making it more difficult to distinguish fakes from genuine watches. You also see this with "inventory" (not sure what the correct term is here) numbers on millitary watches. Someone could engrave a caseback with your serial number. Try to sell your watch then, when a Dozent fakes with the same serial are floating around.

Conversely…Fakers may choose an entirely ‘made up’ number close, to a ‘Mark’ recognised grouping…rather than an existing number ripped off a Forum…to avoid an easily detected, & eminently recognisable, public conflict / clash ?

My supposition is entirely speculative……but then so is yours

Quarter Master / MOD stamps, on military issued watches are not quite the same as movement ‘serial numbers’

That's a valid point. What I stated for sure is not the be all end all answer to the question. Just what I picked up on the topic over the years.

Other than the fake/counterfeit issue, I can't realy think about any personal risk releasing a serial number?

Years ago, a friend went to a garage sale and bought a ladie’s Patek Philippe watch. He wrote to Patek to find out about the watch. Six weeks later, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were on his door step. The watch had been stolen in 1965, when my friend was 8 years old. That sufficed as an alibi, but they took possession of the watch which he had paid $65.00 for. You may be the legitimate sole owner of any watch, but if you don’t know the history of the watch, something like this could happen.

The gendarmes weren’t wearing red serge and riding breeches. Those are ceremonial only. Nor were they mounted on horseback. They were wearing their regulation duty duds, and driving a GMC Jimmy.

I wonder if the RCMP actually trains in the use of the lance.

I'm deeply disappointed... and feel that Due South may have been not telling me the truth about Mounties!

They use lances in the Musical Ride. Check the link.

Of course, the RCMP doesn’t use the lance they way it was used in the era of the suit of armor.

We mostly ride Ford Interceptors (Taurus or Explorer). Horses and lances are only for the members who volunteer and try out to do that PR stuff.

I’m an teacher, so I pretty much only see FitBits, Apple Watches, some G-Shocks, but mostly generic digital watches.

Don’t forget that one of our founders, Trev, was a Mountie before he emigrated from Canada to Australia.
