What are the chances this was a one time quirk and not a sign of problems to come - Speedmaster 9300

Hi

Last week I purchased a stainless steel Speedmaster 9300 new from my AD. Aside from the seconds hand issue (seconds hand jumps back slightly when resetting the chronograph), the watch has been fine. Last night I winded it completely (I heard the click). Today during some errands I checked the time and the watch was dead. The watch had been on my wrist since the morning. I had to wind it again in order for it to startup again.

I know this isn't right. My question is, will it likely get worse? What are the chances it was one of those random unexplained quirks that never happens again? If I have to go through warranty service then I will, though I'd hate to have a brand new watch opened up and worked on. Not to mention I'd be without the watch for a minimum six weeks. Any ideas on this? Anyone have their Speedy 9300 do the same thing? If so, how did you resolve it?

I'm really disappointed with Omega. I have a planet ocean 8500 that had to go into warranty service shortly after I bought it because of a dust particle under the crystal. Omega is really dropping the ball here...

If you had wound it fully, should not stop that soon. Take it in for a warranty fix. Perhaps your AD will agree to swap it for another.

I would be pretty frustrated. Mine has never done anything like this, or anything else concerning, at all. Probably best to take it straight over to the AD whom I presume will do right by you.

I was thinking of going to the Omega boutique tomorrow with a watchmaker on site. They said they'd be able to check for any issues without actually opening the watch. Would this be the preferred route or should I go thru my AD?

Go to the boutique but I really don't know how can they diagnose a watch without opening it. That sounds.....imposible.

I can guarantee you they will explain or try to explain how you should wind a watch. That is the only way they can diagnose without opening the watch.

How many turns did you wind it before you stopped?

Go to the boutique but I really don't know how can they diagnose a watch without opening it. That sounds.....imposible.

The level of diagnostic that can be done depends on what sort of problem you are looking for - some examples:

If it's a timekeeping or balance amplitude issue, then all you need is a timing machine, and no opening of the watch is required.

If it's a loose screw floating around in the watch, intermittently stopping the balance, they will look for it and the hole it came out of. If the watch needs opening for this depends on the case back - on this one I assume it's sapphire but on the various sides of the moon watches, the case backs are all solid I think, so it would have to come off.

If it's diagnosing a worn part, just opening won't do the job - has to be completely disassembled and parts inspected under a microscope.

I suspect the boutique will just look for something obvious, not find anything, and then tell the OP that if it happens again to bring it in to be sent off.

Cheers, Al

Thank you all.

I likely won't have a chance to go to the boutique today. It'll have to wait till next Saturday. I'll keep this thread updated. I just hope they're able to replicate this issue via their diagnostics

Sometimes on a wind from an empty power reserve... I'll give mine a little shake and it starts right back up. Happens to my Rolexes as well. Regardless.... since purchased from AD I'd take full advantage of that Omega Warranty. Better to get it looked at/serviced/running new now than later. As I'm sure it's going to be a bummer w/o for 6 weeks or so... think about if this were to happen 1 day past warranty expiration. 20/20 hindsight comes is priceless and worthless at the same time =)

Thank you all. I can't tell you how beyond frustrated I am with this brand now. Just 2 months ago a brand new planet ocean I purchased had a very noticeable dust particle under the crystal. Even though Omega fixed it under warranty, it was a hassle and now the red dot on the case is gone. I always want to refrain from opening up a brand new watch if there's no need. I've already emailed Swatch Group about this and I told my AD as well. I do not want this fixed. I want a replacement or a refund, but I don't know how likely either or those options are.

@Archer does this seem like a brown wear issue that you mentioned earlier? To reiterate, the watch doesn't start up at all now, no matter if I wind the crown 50+ times or if I shake it vigorously

Could be a number of things, brown wear could be one depending on when the watch was made and if it has the upgraded barrels in it or not. Could be as simple as a loose screw floating around and is now jamming the balance...it happens...

Since this has a display back, flip it over and look for any holes in the movement that look like screws should be in, and check to see if anything is visibly blocking the balance.

But either way, you are going to have to take it in...

This was a known issue, I found an owner who posted about it over a year ago, also made a YouTube video showing his speedmaster 57 with the issue.

Just wanted to give you guys an update:

Swatch Group was very cooperative with me and my request for a refund. So I no longer have the watch and have a full refund. I didnt want a replacement since it seems Omega still can't quite fix the issue with the 9300 movements.
