    Hi all,

Ive been looking to buy a hesalite front sapphire display back Moonwatch. Consequently its meant research, which just seems to open more questions and the need for more research.

Ive discovered a number of different productions like the C.863 Apollo 11 10th anniversary piece from the 1980's and of course the current Sapphire sandwich.

But who of you know what all of the references are for these watches?

Id love to be able to search for them in my bid to enter the lofty echelons of a speedy owner but Im now also very interested in the production history.

Any help and knowledge sharing would be great.

    Cheers all,

    Cambo

just dug this from what photos i have, bottom left is a 3592.50, with tritium lume, year 1994, with an 863 cal, and top right is a 3572.50 with the newer luminova hands, year 2000, with the current 1863 cal. both have a hesalite front and sapphire caseback.

I'm no expert, but these i believe are the more common ones you'd be able to find

You can add one to any Speedmaster.

But the common ones have a sapphire crystal. What's your budget and what exactly are you looking for?

To be 100% pedantic, but there's never been an official "Moonwatch" with a display back since NASA has only certified solid-backed Speedmasters for official use. And to get 111% pedantic, no cal861 ever made it to the moon either...

But that being said the most common references for the display sapphire caseback are 3592, 3572 and 3573 housing the 863, 863/1863 and 1863 movements respectively. From the movements you can then find the full littany of Speedy models with display casebacks. There's also an Omega cal 864, which was the same as the 863/1863 but officially certified as a Chronometer and only used in special/limited models. Also the 864 came in either gilt or rhodium plated examples, and included the 18th jewel even though it was marked as 17.

Watchbase is probably the best reference out there that collects multiple models per caliber, but even that is incomplete.

Im trying to keep it as close to £2k as possible. I really want the hesalite front to keep it as Moonwatchey as possible but I really want to see the movement with the display back.

Haha, yes that is all true Im learning the Moonwatch pedantic ways. Haha.

    So,

    Ref: 3592 - c.863
    Ref: 3572 - c.863 and 1863
    Ref: 3573 - c.1863

And the c.864 with the 18 jewels was used in some limited pieces. Do you (or anyone) know what reference they are?

Again, thanks for the reply, really helpful.

This will be somewhat hard there was a " hesalite sandwhich" but they carry a premium.

I'd find the best hesalite watch for your budget which will not be easy and then buy a display back for about 200 or less.
