This classic example of carelessness seen on Ebay;

I realise that the dial is pretty bad already, but metal tweezers?

Brutal, the most difficult part of assessing a good buy on eBay is factoring in the damage done by the seller by the time the item gets to you!

Here is one I bought on eBay last month, sellers picture vs what arrived.

Looks like it went through the authentication program.

If it went through authentication, wouldn’t the caseback be be missing entirely?

I'd get a refund.

Dang! That’s painful to look at. Cringeworthy. Maybe he could just use some soft cloth to wrap around the ends next time to make it ever so slightly better.

Nope, when the owner admits to having no watch experience in the description I don't dare ask as this exact scenario has happened to me once before on ebay. I questioned this afterwards and indeed someone else had.

Honestly there is no need to ask when grimy dead skin stretch band watch fishing!

The seller initially denied being able to see the damage in my pictures, thus I removed the bracelet and labeled it with some massive arrows and he instantaneously agreed to a partial refund and said he would 'investigate' what had happened. To be honest he was friendly and did not dispute anything so I am fine with the outcome, it's all good, I have no beef.

I am sure it won't be the last time, as I can't bring myself to e-mail sellers insisting they do not open watches I am interested in - I think it would come off a bit rude when everyone else is usually asking for movement pictures.

I once bought a Speedmaster 376.0822 that had a red wax dot on it but the auction house had opened it and cracked the seal. Lesson is someone always asks to see the movement so I guess you just have to assume it will get opened.

Ok I am rambling now 😜

Sorry to distract from the Speedmaster dial but felt this was appropriate content for a careless ebay seller thread.

Seems the new authentication program is proving popular around here 😁, I have no personal experience with that yet, hopefully I never will?!

I've seen a lot of eBay photos like this. I believe the sellers think they're demonstrating watchmaker expertise: "I could just take a photo of this watch dial on the bench or in my hand, but I'm a professional and use professional tools, like these professional watchmaker tweezers."

And while we're talking about listing photos vs. reality, here are a couple of shots of the same Rolex dial. To be fair, both shots were in the same listing, so the seller was not trying to deceive. It does demonstrate, however, that almost any kind of damage can be obscured.

I'm wondering how he's sold the SAME dial with exactly the same chipped/missing lume on the same hour markers has been sold FOUR times! Must be that specific batch of Omega dials shipped to Pakistan back in the 60's I guess! Lol!

Why does the eBidiot need to hold the dial with a tweezer anyways... just lay the dial down flat and take a picture...
don't see the point of covering any missing lume with the tweezer as there is plenty of missing lume elsewhere on the dial

Go Figure
