At least that's what the wife and I are calling my new 311.32.40.30.01.001... that's WAY too many numbers to remember! For those of you good with names and/or reference numbers, you already know I'm referring to the First Omega In Space! It was a bit of an odyssey getting to this point. It involved a lot of soul searching on whether I kept a 3366.51 that (for my own reasons) I always felt was more an investment than it was a keeper. Recently, I visited an AD to try talk about what trade deals could be made for a Plain Jane Speedy Professional... and I saw ol' Wally. There's a ton that I really love about this watch. Biggest is how much better it fits on my small-cause-I'm-Asian wrists. 2.3mm really makes a difference for us tiny folks! The symmetry of the sans-crown-guards case was also appealing to my eye. When I slapped it on, it just looked RIGHT! I will always love the true Moon Watch, but there was always a bit of convincing self that it was okay that it was a touch big since the history makes up for it (and that's on top of the primary reason - the application of the Rose Gold on the sub dials)! But with Wally, there was no compromising solely for history sake! Here was an Omega that went to space, essentially making it the the grand daddy of the venerable Speedy Pro, and it looked good on my wrist! Win Win!!! To make a long story short, the AD WANTED my 3366.51, and I wanted Wally. Within an hour, a straight trade was negotiated, and I found myself walking out of the store with Wally strapped to my wrist! And I could not be happier! Alex San Mateo, CA
Wow you worked some magic for a great piece. Any wrist shots? How long had your AD had it if they mentioned it that is.
Awesome story. Phenomenal pictures. And the "small-cause-I'm-Asian wrists" made me crack up! Enjoy your new Wally!
To be honest, I didn't do too much... short of having a Speedy that he clearly wanted. Perhaps he had a good customer who told him sometime in the past, "Keep an eye out for an Apollo 15 35th Anniversary for me." As for how long they had it, I don't think for very long. When one of his staff brought it out, she had mentioned they had recently sold another FOIS. She made it clear it was generally popular with customers. And the wrist shot. Alex San Mateo, CA
Jwit - What can I say? I call it like I see it - I got pipe cleaners for the area where my arm connects to my hand. LOL! Shibata - Many thanks, sir! JimInOz - I totally agree. I had purchased the 3366.51 mainly on the fact that (besides at the time being affordable) it was a mission that flew on my birth year, but the way the gold was applied to the sub dials ALWAYS bothered me! Now had it been a standard Speedy Pro, then there was a real chance that I wouldn't have had a problem. The size issue on it's own might have been workable... but not with all that flash. Wow, stunning Speedy! I've always been more drawn to the Seamaster but the black dial with brown leather strap is just so right.. I wouldn't change a thing about it.
