Gents - I am headed on a mountaineering adventure at end of month (MT Baker, WA) - wondering if can or should wear my speedy on the week long trip through rock, snow and ice. Any reason not to from environmental perspective?

    Thinking Kizzy strap.

Has anyone worn their Speedy on an adventure to add to the sentimental journey/memory of their beloved time piece?

    Thank you.

Speedy is a tool watch. As long as you don't mind getting possible dings and or scratches, it will be fine.. That being said, I wear a g-shock when I climb, hike, camp or play in the water. Speedy stays home:cool:

If you're willing to spend up to $800 for a full service if you hit it too hard accidentally -- sure, why not. Me, I'd wear something a lot cheaper.

2 years ago (Aug 2014) I went on a 10 day, 80-mile trek. I did not even consider taking my Speedy. It rained every day. I think the watch would have been beaten to a pulp if I had taken it. It's rough out there, and I wore my digital Armitron watch, and my son wore his timex ironman. They served us well.

There is a wide gulf between "can" and "should". Casio GWM5610-1 would be my choice for anything outdoorsy where I didn't want to be wearing a GPS watch like a Garmin Fenix. At less than $90 from Amazon you can't do much better - solar, multiband atomic sync, 200m water resist, too ugly to steal. Can't do much better than that for rough travel.

Wear it, take lots of pics!
I've abused a Reduced for decades, speedy should be plenty robust.
I just went up a few CA 14ers this month, SM300 MC did just fine. Your watch will likely be under long sleeves up there anyways. If it wasn't obvious by now, I don't collect watches, just have a few. I like your mention of sentimental value. I always figure if I'm going to have my carcass recovered after some terrible mishap, it'll be easier to ID me :) image.jpg

Mount Baker! I got lost on that mountain doing off trail snowboarding... got pulled out of the snow, face down and incoherent by ski patrol at about 22:30. What a day.

This calls for a dedicated hiking watch, G shock or SKX!!!

Can't go wrong with the SKX, but the SRP311, SRP313, SRP315 etc. Monsters can be had for less than $200 on Amazon and you get the hacking/hand windable 4R36 movement.

That's true, guess then it depends on aesthetics and if you care about hacking and/or hand winding in your beater watch.

ChuckMK23 just asked about taking his wonderful watch up to about 10,800'. I see no reason for this to turn into a Seiko/beater discussion guys! If anything, we should be pointing out that it's an active volcano  and to take lots of pics.

    <edit: wait, that's cool, I didn't know about manual winding on Monsters...>

If it went to the moon it can go to a mountain.... The question is: will it come back? Or, will YOU?

Wear your Speedie, that's what it's made for. Adventure!

Borrow one of those fancy protector straps from @Mad Dog

Mine in the Cairngorms, Eastern Highlands, Scotland.
