Does anyone have any good recommendations for servicing a watch in NYC? Planning on servicing my Rolex 1680 and looked around yelp for some. Any places to avoid?

Did some research on yelp and the person Sergio recommended as mixed reviews. Last option would be to go to Rolex but that is also the most expensive option.

My original thought was just to bring it to Tourneau or Central Watch (Hodinkee video)

Omg don't bring it to any of those places and ESPECIALLY NOT Rolex themselves. Rolex and tourneau will replace everything in the movement with new parts and or even replace your nice red font dial and not give it back to you. I've seen it happen before. You need to bring that thing to someone who can appreciate vintage.

That being said, lots of people also ship their watches to watch makers around the country who specialize in vintage.

Given that Central Watch quoted me near Rolex prices ($550) for servicing a vintage Certina DS, I don't even want to think about what they would charge you. As a fellow ny'er, I've given up looking locally.

To be fair, Lenny, it's not easy for watchmakers to get past those Certina's double security.

It was missing the ring...security was already compromised[emoji17].

I would seriously caution against using Rolex for anything vintage for already stated reasons. After having communicated with a watchmaker who quit his job at a Tourneau service center, and how he described the working conditions there, if true I would think twice about using them as well...

Don't know the other shop you mentioned though...honestly seek out feedback from people on forums and as has been mentioned there are people who specialize in servicing these watches, so you are not always tuck with or best served by some of the bigger places.

    Cheers, Al

Thanks for the input Al, seems like the best option is to go with a vintage watch specialist

Whatever you want to do man, no pressure. I do know Al has long wait times, but he is good. Goodluck.

While it has been a number of years now, I have had good experiences with the following watchmaker in NYC. Of course he isn't inexpensive, but his work is first-rate.

So I stopped by aaron farber service center across the street from Rolex in the subway. I was trying to explain that I couldn't get my insert to snap into my bezel and that I had done it to my other sub but the one in question was a bit more stubborn. The lady gave me such a snippy attitude with no patience at all, basically told me to do it myself !@# off. Perhaps it was because I went in at 9am and she wasn't a morning person but rather disappointed and put off, won't be going back there anytime soon...

I went there first actually :)

The watchmaker there considered my insert damaged since I didn't have the pearl in so they wouldn't work on it. Otherwise it would've been free!

Weird. They reset mine...anyway, did you manage to get someone to do it yet or are you still insert-less
