We visited the Glenfarclas distillery in the Spey Valley, in 2009. Speaking for Glenfarclas, the grain is sprouted by independent firms, to Glenfarclas specs. The rest of the process takes place at Glenfarclas. The bottling is again, done by other firms. The oldest cask we saw in the dunnage warehouses was (IIRC), 1958. When we got home, next time I was at the liquor store, I saw a tiny bottle (1 1/2 oz. ?) of very old Glenfarclas single malt for just under $1,300.00 (Cdn.). Too rich for my blood! Besides, owing to medications I am obliged to take, I can no longer tolerate hard liquor of any type, unless I water it down. So why bother?

I used to live within about 40 miles of some of the 'big' distilleries - Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie etc. I also spent a week canoeing down the Spey, visiting a few of the Speyside distilleries along the way. That was fun!

I have to admit, although I am Scottish and grew up within a couple of miles of 2 distilleries, I prefer Irish Whiskey. Jamesons has to be the about the best value you can get. If you don't mind spending a few quid some of the better Bush Mills stuff is hard to beat.

    Brings back some great memories.

We also went to Edradour, the smallest distillery in Scotland and I remember the lovely Dalwhinne in its lovely desolate location.

There were many others, but there are also some we missed due to the Islay ferry at Kennacraig being booked out :(.

But there's always next time :D.

Although I like everything surrounding whisky - the history, the traditions, the technolgy, the culture - I was never able to develop a taste for it. And it hasn't been for lack of trying. I just can't get the stuff to agree with me...

Bummer - Islay would be my whole purpose for going! Have to collect all the rent they owe me at Laphroaig! They owe me quite a few drams for my small plot of peat bog...been a FOL for over 20 years now I think!

One day I will do this...been on my list for too long so I need to get on that.

I have tried Laphroaig and I gave the near full bottle away, I couldn't even drink it with Lemonade. My description of it is Diesel Oil mixed with Peat. Quite easily the worst Whisky ever.
I used to have a relative working at Macallan's and had a private out of hours tour of the Distillery:) The on-site Customs man insisted I sampled the just made Clear Stuff 128proof, I blame him for my lifelong addiction:D.

I've been to Glenfiddich a couple of times and they do the whole visitor experience pretty well. Then again, it ain't a backyard still ;) glenfiddich.jpg

also being Scottish I absolutely hated the stuff till my mid twenties when a Japanese colleague and I went to an excellent whiskey bar in Amsterdam and I figured in for a penny in for a pound and ordered a wee dram of Macallan 25 and have never looked back...must say moving to the US and discovering some wonderful hard to find Kentucky bourbons has been a lot of fun too!!

I have to agree with @Hut27. Laphroaig is pretty dire. As @Maximus84 said previously the Speyside whiskies are the best. Just my opinion. I find the Westcoast ones rather unpleasant. I must admit I have never found any whisky to be so unpalatable that I gave it away. Just swig it and don't breathe through your nose at the time.
