Virus and corona watches

Seems like used watch sales have increased in numbers since 2019. At least specific models and brands increased a lot.
However prices do not drop. On the contrary I see some omega models going up every day. Seems logical and strange at the same time. People are staying home and want to buy or invest , but also many people do not work at all and get smaller salaries. In my case here in Greece In 2020 I got one third of the money I got in 2019. It seems like 2021 will be worse... however I see my self buying normally like I did. Maybe I feel safe because I know I can sell with no big loss. But my question is: are there so many people selling and buying watches ?
thoughts?

From what I understand, folks with stable jobs and stable income have nowhere to go and nothing else to spend their money on - no trips, no lattes, no impulse buying while out and about. Nothing except their passions that can be accommodated online. Watches are a great outlet for excess cash. So if you are selling, there are still lots of well-funded buyers. If you are buying, there is a lot of well-funded competition

sadly, those with money are saving huge amounts, while those who are financially affected by COVID must have tremendous stresses.

Normally I'm going skiing with the family and after that with friends. Those two trips are expensive. But this year I cant go because of corona. So my first corona non skiing watch has arrived...

Just pre-ordered a watch to celebrate my birthday (the second I'll have in this mess) and didn't think twice because a planned trip that had been postponed last year is 100% canceled for this year too. fυck Covid.

Discussed before. White collar workforce has not been as affected by Covid. These are your watch buyers.

It’s really weird. Such a disconnect. At work today I was literally sending out Hail Mary emails trying to find rental assistance for a number of people. The demand for help is so large all the programs that provide help now have a waiting list to get on the waiting list. I’ve never seen anything like it. Even after your vaccine your walking around with a mask and social distancing. It’s like getting surreal and the disconnect seems to be growing.

Only watch bought in a year now.

But its' condition was an overwhelming driving force along with cancelling seasonal trips.

Exactly - along with basically zero interest rates so the cost of a discretionary spend is zip...

And yet we have the 'need' to send $2,000 to almost every adult in the US, even those families who are making $150,000 and who never suffered any economic damage in 2020. Why? No other reason then Joe Biden promised it.

Personally, I'm white collar in the UK and feel our outgoings have only increased...

We maybe saving due to remote working/no commute but while @home 24/7 we're still paying the mortgage, insurances, phone contracts and the usual home related bills whilst the interweb is being obsolutely hammered. Our utilities have also increased across the board and with 3 teenagers constantly raiding for food...

No holiday simply means we're adding to the pot, hopefully a better break away when we all come out the other side, besides, I wouldn't want to know how SWMBO would react if I dipped into it 😗

As for watches, one every year or three is plenty as I save my pocket money towards them 👍

In my country (Greece) that more than 25% of GDP depends on tourism things are different. In my island (Crete) for example 60% of people have not really been working since April 2020. Other smaller islands like Santorini or Mykonos depend 90% on tourism, so if this thing continues for more than another year I think it will be a disaster.
I don't really know if used watch prices continue rising in the next months, but for now I think that it is still a good investment, at least better than keeping your money in a bank.
So in the end do you prefer buying watches or going on holidays?

Looks interesting but to read it you must pay subscription.. do you have the article somewhere else ?
Ooops, thanks 👍

Here’s the gist...The eagerness of enthusiasts to track down the perfect timepiece resulted in a banner year for interest in - and sales of - vintage watches in 2020. Chrono24 reported its best year ever, with US$2.4-billion in transactions, an increase of 25 per cent over 2019. Hodinkee, meanwhile, recently received US$40-million in funding from backers including LVMH, Google and celebrity watch collectors John Mayer and Tom Brady...
