What good is 50M of WR if Omega recommendations are that the watch is not fit for snorkelling or scuba diving?

Actually 50m doesn't equal 50m. Because a watch can resist a static pressure of 50m doesn't mean it is water resistant for prolonged use at 50m. Probably why Omega doesn't recommend snorkeling with it.

So why do the natives routinely quote 50m means 50M?

People like being right. The watch is water-resistant to 50m and will pass a static test at that pressure, but water resistance doesn't mean it's waterproof, so there's a good chance water will get in during prolonged use. For diving or snorkeling you need a watch that was conceived to be "waterproof" like a Seamaster. Or better yet a Rolex ;-)

Because, as the post below shows, shit happens.

I know you claim to be an engineer of some type, so have you ever heard of safety factor? Consider the 50m rating a safety factor, something every engineer (even and electrical one) should understand as a basic principle.

But as always, (t)roll on my friend...

I call that fake news ;-) By static I mean a quick test in a pressure tester. By prolonged use I mean over an extended amount of time.

    Ergo 50m ≠ 50m

Thanks for that. I have been persistent on this tread as I believe that there's been a lot of poor information about the use and WR of Speedmasters in this thread and I would rather people not have issues with their watches.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Has any mod checked this Black Tulip account for a Dougal second account?

Unlike the resistance ratings on some mobile phones, those on watches are not time dependant, well not in terms of hours or days. A watch that passes a depth rating is rated to pass it for a day or week or until the seals fail which could be years.

ps I am glad your use of the word static didn’t suggest like it appeared you were invoking it’s opposite, dynamic, but you were skirting with it alright.

pps the only person obsessed with diving and s*ork*lling is Dougal. He is bringing it up over and over to deflect from his inability to understand the mathematical concept of parity.

Loooool. I'm not taking sides. I agree that the watch is tested water resistant to 50m, but I have my doubts it would stay dry after a couple of shallow dives.

This seems to be your preferred system, don't like or agree with someone, then straight on to insults and personal attacks.

No that’s mine. He tries facts then gets frustrated when idiots ignore them. I go with ‘stop being a dick’ then try facts later.

That's because diving with a Speedy Pro is not recommended, and we have official Omega confirmation of this.

I believe @Nathan1967 used his Speedmaster as a dive watch (along with his Ibiza 'Bund' Speedo as a dive suite :whistling:) on several occasions...I think we should ask him to settle this dispute once and for all, as the most experienced OF Speedmaster-Divemaster....

Actually dive watches have to be tested for some 50 hours and every single watch has to be tested. Water resistant watches only need to be tested for 10 minutes and only a small sampling is required - not individual watches.
