    Hi,

Last night, I admired my father in laws watch which was an omega seamaster with day date on it. He told me it was his father's but he never wears it, in fact he said he didn't even like it ha ha but to my surprise he is after giving it to me today. It's a basic seamaster automatic. Im just looking for some information on the model and year. The box is long gone but as it's a sort of heirloom I was thinking of perhaps trying to order an original box or display box. Below is a picture of it. Thanks in advance.

    Hello, and welcome along!

The best way to tell exactly what you have, will be to get the model number from inside the case, and the calibre number from the movement.

For these you'll need to get the watch opened up by a professional, or if it has a screw on back (notches on the case back to allow a tool to be fitted), you should be able to open it yourself with a case opening ball (soft rubber children's ball that costs a few pounds/dollars).

If at all unsure, take it to a watch maker.

    Cheers

    Chris

Thank you for your quick reply. I know I didn't give you much to work with. I tried the back cover but i can't open it. I'll bring it to a jeweller's and keep you posted. Thanks again

I googled the sparkle dial and it's definitely the watch. Yes my plan is to get it serviced and cleaned, it's still ticking away, the date is right but the day is wrong. Did they come with a stainless steel strap or would the original of had a leather strap If it did I wI'll replace the bracelet with a strap. The bracelet does have the omega logo on it though. Thanks again.

Both would have been options at the time. :)

    Here's my 166.032 with a cal. 752. Admittedly, a crappy photo.

Thank you. I had no idea there was so much to these watches. It's fascinating.

Very nice. Definitely the same watch just different colours. I like them. Is the stainless steel bracelet on yours original?

Different movement numbers. The sparkles, best as I can tell, came in two cases (references) and 3 calibers. References 168.023 and 166.032 and caliber 750 (17 jewels made for the American market), 751 and 752 (24 jewels). Yours isn't a 751 because it is a chronometer and it would say so, on the dial (see photo). If I'm wrong about any of this, I'll be corrected shortly.

2 more reference numbers for "sparkles" although from an earlier year and having 56x calibres.
