For any of you who missed today's Phillips "STYLED. TIMELESS WATCHES & HOW TO WEAR THEM" in New York. Some interesting/surprising mixed results (up & down). I haven't had the chance of seeing any of these watches in person so can't really comment about actual condition other than what can obviously seen in the photos. 2915-2: Case looks overpolished from the catalog images. 2998-2: I would have expected this one to sell for more. 105.003-65: Nice case & bracelet. Hand stack looks repainted. Chip (?) on dial above A in OMEGA. "Chrono-Creep" $32,500 all in, quite a high result for a run-of-the-mill Ed White.. 145.012-67 "Ultraman": For a not so attractive Ultraman (without even an original bracelet) it achieved a surprisingly high price. 2913-3: Case looks too polished. BRN 165.024: 2914-1: Very nice example. 176.004:
That Ed White went for much higher than the "Collector" grade price on SP101.com, what a surprise. The lume on the dial is very pleasant to look at though. And that 2998-2 seems like a bargain.
A lot of ups and downs. Is this the new record for the Ultraman? Same watch discussed in the below thread. https://omegaforums.net/threads/ultraman-on-the-dink.47288/ Also a great result for the 2914-1. I believe there were some doubts on the bezel for the 2913-3 that resulted in the hammered price.
the 105.003 and the 2914... wow. outliers? they definitely seem extraordinary, though they are both very nice watches.
I think @oddboy may have just meant that the prices were extraordinary. The RM is special for sure. I've never actually seen one of those in person.
Clearly you need to post pictures with models wearing them for another 100% increase in price. That ed white price is ridiculous. Reminds me of that modern 2018 GMT master that hammered for over 20k recently. I wonder if someone just wanted it really badly... and whether or not that Bloomberg article hyping them and valuating them at 20k USD played a role (probably).
...looks like the speed wobble before the crash...some very odd results indeed. Agreed on all counts. Maybe Archiebald has it right regarding the MOTFM watch ... (first 2 minutes absolutely crack me up)
I also found the 2998 surprisingly low. Although it got no press or buzz before the auction. Did anyone see it? I wish I had looked at it in person The 2914-1 seems have repriced following the Geneva philips auction example https://www.phillips.com/detail/OMEGA/CH080218/112 I think these were 2 super super special RM examples Off topic, but was anyone else just *shocked* by this Movado result? https://www.phillips.com/detail/MOVADO/NY080118/90 Maybe the m90s and m95s will finally get the respect they deserve, but i thought half this #? Really curious to see how the soyuz does today at Fortuna...
As said, probably an outlier, but such a generally undervalued reference, that the spike doesn't actually surprise me. Thought it would take longer, though. We will see...
I have nothing specific to add to a discussion by dedicated Speedy aficionados, but perhaps my comment will help explain tangentially why such a hammer price could happen. Personally, the standard 29xx-x watches don't get me excited the way they do so many of you. I get that they're old, they're rare and they're special to those who celebrate every minor nuance of these historic time pieces. For a simpleton like me, if I had $100k burning a hole in my pocket and my networth was several multiples above current reality, a watch like the Ultraman would be much more interesting and so I'd be willing to pay for it. Why? - it is very 'vintage'... 2018 - 1968 = 50 year difference... 1968 - 1958 = 10 year difference... so relative to today the '68 model is 5x older than the '58 model is older than the UM. - it is very 'rare'... cue the multiple articles, blog posts and threads about it, as well as the fact it was celebrated by the modern ST2. - it is gorgeous... of all the watches shared in the OP, this is the one I'd love to look down on and admire throughout the day. So the only thing I can add to this discussion is that just maybe the vintage watch auction world is not entirely calculated and profit driven...? Since I'm not in the league throwing those sums around on watches, I enjoy this one with pleasure!
