Hello everyone! I would appreciate your insights about the authenticity of this 711 Omega De Ville watch. The seller is willing to sell it for $280. Am I getting a good deal or getting ripped off? Cheers!

Do you have better pictures of the dial ? From what I see, I think the dial was refinished and personally, I don't like the watch without the sweep second hand.

I would not buy it (but that's only my idea)

I had suspicions about it too. These fonts are some of the few that are recreated fairly accurately. I asked for better pics too.

Hoi, there's no seconds hand because it's an ultra-thin.

At the price he was offered it's a good deal either way.

    Dennis.

I know that caliber doesn't have a sweep second hand.

    Look lifeless to me

To each his own, but I like the clean look. Less is more baby! Plus, not having a second hand cures you of being accuracy anal.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm having thoughts too that the dial might be refinished. I will post more photos shortly.

    Dennis.

I still don't like them, whatever brand name they are in.

To me, a watch without a second hand is more like a jewelry, not a watch to tell time.

A watch is jewelry for men, with or without a second hand. If you need to time something down to the second, you should be using something MUCH more accurate than a wrist watch.

I searched on the net and what I found have the "m" in automatic, not "M" like on your dial. The Swiss Made on your dial also look bad.

I'm thinking the same way too -- the "A" is capitalized and based from what I'm seeing from other 711 watches, it's usually in lower case. The rest were capitalized in the latter models.

Hmmm. I'm not so quick to condemn this as a redial. Omega was experimenting with a lot of different dial styles and fonts in the mid-1970's. Part of the reason why the company almost went under at that time. No brand identity at all.

In the Omega Vintage Database, there is a listing for 151.0039, but it was a limited edition floral design dial that looks nothing like the OP's watch. However, there is this listing for this watch with a cal. 711 with a very similar dial and handset:

    http://www.omegawatches.com/spirit/history/vintage-omegas/vintage-watches-database?ref=14423

There was also a post in this forum asking about another example of Ref. 151.0039, again without the floral dial:

    http://omegaforums.net/threads/help-please.4028/

The dial on that example is a little different than on the OP's watch, but I have seen both styles of fonts on Omegas from this era.

I think this is one of those times that you just have to see the watch in person to properly judge its originality.

Then again, if the seller is in India, I'd run away fast.

Thank you for your insights! Much appreciated. The seller is from Italy and he's been very helpful and patient with all my queries. I have attached more photos of the dial:

At that price, you're not getting ripped-off, even if it turns out to be a refinished dial. Just bear in mind that it's likely to need a service (cost of at least $100). Even if all original, the value isn't more than the $400 or so you'll have invested.

If you can live with that small gamble on the dial and like the look of the watch, then go for it.

He even lowered it to $260 now. I know, it's like buying a new car and you are left with maintenance bills and all. I have decided to get a better De Ville watch and I am assured that it's genuine and came from good hands. Cheers!
