I own a few old magazines that were gifted to me for various birthdays, thus they are mostly from 1950
I decided to thumb through them to look for fun ads for vintage watches - anything to keep me from the Private Watch Sales forum is a useful distraction
I started with this Life magazine and was somewhat surprised to not find a single advertisement for any timepiece ::confused2::
Does that surprise you as well? Life Magazine.jpg

Likely means another watch lover with a steady hand and a razor blade got to them first ;)

Only the Newsweek magazine was published at a time when one would expect to see advertisements for (for example) Christmas gift ideas. Watches being one suggestion as a Christmas gift. Ads for luxury items often follow a logical cycle. Valentines Day, Mother’s Day, Graduation, weddings, etc. Go to the vintage Bulova website at:

    https://www.mybulova.com/vintage-bulova-watch-ads?title=195

Look for the vintage Bulova ads. They are grouped by decades. Check the group showing Bulova ads from 1950. There were LOTS of them. Same with 1951, etc. Companies such as Bulova (and Gruen) had their favourite demographic targets, and thereby they advertised in specific magazines, at appropriate times of year.

Great topic for a thread. Here's a nice Christmas gift for your returning GI.

What is the best ( tear-proof ) method for removing an ad from a magazine for the purposes of framing it for display?
    Thanks

As I said, no watch ads, but some very cool 69 year old ads nonetheless:
    "Ford for 1950"

Love those old ads, they really appeal to me I think there is something about the basic format of them that is an antidote to modern adverts.

Remember when I was a kid and loved browsing the old "Reader Digest" mags (40s and 50s) my grandma had home, where I spent many childhood vacations. I remember there were plenty of watch ads, specially Bulova, Hamilton, mainly American brands but some Omega too I recall.
