Vintage Compax renovation

I have a Gold Compax from 1945 that belonged to my grandfather. It needs serious renovation. The dial has moisture damage and one pusher disappeared. I would like a recommendation of a reputable watch repair place. I'm based in California, but I can send the watch to a shop anywhere in the US.

Thanks

Ok … New pusher cap, movement service, crystal polish and careful consideration of some sort of light touch dial clean ( or not). Whats your budget? I see $750 -1300+ worth of work here. If it was my grandfathers watch, I’d go for it. May we see the case back?

Welcome to the forums. What a nice watch and (I hope) great memories of your grandfather.

Living in Atlanta, I'm not familiar with California watchmakers specializing in vintage timepieces, but I have heard many good things about Nesbits in Seattle.

I would not mess around with the dial, just leave it.

From what I’ve heard of late, I would not consider them.

That's surprising. I have no personal experience, but I just ran a quick search of this site (all forums and child forums) in the past 6 months, and all of the 19 results were positive. Has something happened very recently?

I heard they didn’t want to take vintage any longer.

That's a shame. It's also a trend that worries me as an owner of vintage watches. The watchmaker I use is already semi-retired.

FWIW, the Nesbit's web site still lists vintage as the first bullet under services, but of course folks are not always fastidious in keeping web sites up-to-date. And regardless of what they advertise, if they don't want to work on vintage, I wouldn't send them any of my watches.

Have given the OP via PM the names of two shops that will work on UG.

Here is another EB with fairly close serial to yours (On the left).

I didn’t realize the same case reference could have either round or square pushers !?

I don’t think anything can be done for your dial, I would leave it alone. The chances of getting an original pusher cap must be about zero, I would just give it a service and find a cap that fits and looks ok.

Beautiful watch and amazing family history for you.

Agreed on the need to find a cap that fits. Possibly replace both to match.

Very interesting. I suppose one had to be a general to receive the moon phase. My grandfather was a colonel or major. I cannot remember.

There are no EB or FAB issued watches with moonphase as far as I know. If you are speaking about the above Tri in my pic (on the right, which is an exotic dial "Harry Truman"), that's completely unrelated, I just didn't happen to have a pic of the EB by itself. Just wanted to mention so I don't create confusion.
