Hello everyone,
I recently bought a 1972 Omega Constellation Chronometer F300 tuning fork wristwatch on eBay and I would really appreciate your help from the community to judge whether it is all original and whether I paid a fair price.
I paid US$352.38 in total, shipped to Mexico, from the eBay. The watch is still on its way, so for now I only have the photos from the listing (attached). Once it arrives I will post my own photos of the dial, hands, crown, case, caseback and movement.
I am hoping you can help me with these questions:
  1. Do the dial, hands, crown, case and caseback look correct and original for this reference and year?
  2. Is the caseback consistent with this model, and do the serial number and case reference match a 1972 watch? I will post the serial and the reference as soon as I can read them.
  3. What should I check once I have it in hand (the movement, the tuning fork hum, a possible redial, a replaced crown, polishing)?
  4. At US$352 in this condition, is it a good price, or what would you consider a fair range today?
  5. Do you recommend any watchmaker with experience in the F300 who can service it, and what should I expect it to cost?

I know these watches are delicate and that parts for the tuning fork movement are hard to find, so any advice on what to look for is very welcome.

Thank you very much in advance,
Jorge Kelleher

Yes all looks original.

Yes, serial number indicates 1972. 198.0075 is the correct reference.

  • What should I check once I have it in hand (the movement, the tuning fork hum, a possible redial, a replaced crown, polishing)?
There's little to check. These suffer from issues with the date wheel. Do not adjust the date between 9pm and midnight, doing so can break a tooth on the date wheel and the watch won't change date properly on it's own the next time that day comes round. It can take a month to check.

  • At US$352 in this condition, is it a good price, or what would you consider a fair range today?
$352 is fair for a working hummer in that condition.

  • Do you recommend any watchmaker with experience in the F300 who can service it, and what should I expect it to cost?
Not in your locale. Jarret Harkness at Unwind in Time, Electric Avenue, or Chris Radek a.k.a. The Time guy. All are in the USA.

Frankly it's not a good example. The gold plating was worn though in multiple places and the dial / movement is grubby. But it's a working hummer, and an Omega. What you've paid is about right for what it is. A better one would have been at least $500.
